Best performing tyres

I'm looking for tyres 195/65/15 for a 1973 Targa 2.4E - what is the general concensus for the best performing tyre for spirited driving (wet and dry)??

There are a few threads on tyre size and choice but I was wandering what the opinions are for the optimal choice?

My car is on its 2nd set of Vredestein Sporttracs

If I could afford it I would like to fit Michelin XWX 185/70

I run Kumho Ecsta KH11's on my RS Rep - good in the dry and the wet, but 'iffy' on the damp greasy roads. Good value (IMHO), cost me £186 the SET 12 months ago (195/65 & 225/60) & will last another year (= maybe 6000 miles)

Avon CR6ZZ's on the 912 - they were on when I got the car. They have done a couple of European rallies on the 912 and are amazing! They just hang on and on in all weathers/conditions

Maybe it's because there's less power? BUT £175 a CORNER

I run Toyo T1-S (superceded by T1-R) on the street, wet or dry. I think they are reasonable price/performance tires.

edit: I run larger sizes than you're talking about: 205/55/15 on 6" wide Fuchs in front, and 2225/50/15 (with neg. camber max'ed) on 7" Fuchs in back.

I used to run 205/55 and 225/50 but kept 'catching' the underside of the car on speed humps! My car is low and stiff and the low profile tyres made for a bone shaking ride. Changing to 195/65 and 225/60 (on 7's and 8's) gave me 15mm more ground clearance and more pleasurable ride - I think the higher profile tyres provide more suspension movement than the suspension itself!
The 185/70's on the 912 are better again.
Or maybe I'm getting too old for low, hard suspension set ups

Back on topic - I ran Vreidestein Sportrac's on a 3.2 I had in a previous life. Good all-round (no pun!) tyre IMHO - decent quality/performance and not unreasonably priced

I've had a few sets of Avon CR6ZZ's and a lot of the historic guys race swear by them. Personally I can't fault them, they are a bit more expensive, but then there's something far more valuable balanced on them.

I'm using Pirelli P6000s .
195/65/15 and 215/60/15 on 7 and 8s
Excellent in wet and dry and v.good mileage, and not expensive.
Ditto for Bridgestone RE 71 used previously.

Yes, I am getting old, too, Mick.

I agree that the higher profile tires add some cushion to the suspension, which is nice if you're running oversized torsion bars like I am.

I have new 195/65/15 Pirelli P6000 Powergy all round. They are easily available, relatively cheap and seem pretty good to me.
