Dash top re-covering

Can a quality job be done of re-covering dash pads in either vinyl or leather? or is the only option for new looking dash to shell out £700 for a new one from porsche? Does anyone know of anywhere that does dash re-covering?

Should imagine any good custom upholsterer would be able to recover a dash top, but I would suspect a top quality job will need the dash top to be removed anyway.

Are the new ones from Porsche any good? I recall all sorts of stories on the Early911SRegistry website about fitment problems from the dashes supplied by Stoddard's Porsche. I imagine they were supplying factory parts.

I did mine with stretchy vinyl from http://www.woolies.com, some monster contact adhesive, a hair dryer and a bucket of patience

I repaired the splits and distortion first with filler and GRP then sanded flat before trimming. The only bit I struggled with was the speaker grille. Without the correct tool to pierce all the holes it can only ever look a mess, as I don't use the speaker I trimmed it straight over and it looks fine. I also cut the vinyl slightly short on the edges of the grille and it pulled off slightly under many hours in teh sun over a couple of summers. Still much better than the original cracked distorted panel though

I have been told that you can cover the dash top but it will never look like the original item as the top is not originally covered, the vinyl is formed and bonded to the foam during manufacture. So I ordered a new Porsche dash top after reading the threads carefully on Early911S. It turned up a couple of weeks ago and it looks as if it will not fit, all the same problems as the guys on Early911S have had, I am currently awaiting advice from the supplier as what to do, I have been told that if I mark it trying to fit it and then it turns out it will not fit correctly then it will not be returnable. I will let you know how I get on.

I met Richard red targa the other night and saw his beautiful 2.4S - out of interest a previous owner has covered his dash top in leather, with stitching along the leading edge

Richard if you're reading this could you post a picture?

I thought it looked great - leaving aside issues of originality

Hi Steve, I have a copy of 911P/World dated Jan 2003 that covers replacement of a 1968 912 dash pad that was in poor condition. Southbound trimmers have been involved with the job, If you want a copy of the article let me know and I will sort that for you.

Ive found a company that sells a glue that melts vinyl together used for repairing vinyl seating im going to give that a try first if it turns out a balls up ill then look at recovering. The original vinyl looks to be more of a heat shrunk covering rather than a glue on vinyl cover so I can see getting the contours correct could be dificult but no more harder than covering in leather I suppose.
