Restoring Poor condition Fuchs - Pics

Hi,

I have been testing different restoration finishes on fuchs which are in poor condition. By that I mean pitted around the edges of the spokes, which is very difficult to polish out before being re-anodised as per factory original. The problem is once anodised any pitting really shows up and also some wheels are not worth spending the full cost of restoration. This means that some wheels are not restored.

There is another option. Here are some pics of wheels that have just been re-anodised, they are by no means perfect as they were not great to begin with but are still 400% better than they were. The process is not very cheap but is still cheaper than the full restoration work.

They will look better when I have detailed them as per original. The pics also don't show some of the minor marks, but like I said it is an economic alternative to full resto work.

hi alan, so these rims have just been anodised withouht any sanding or resto work?? any closer up pics of the finish and what sort of cost per rim would this cost??

Hi Bazz,

I will get some close up pics for you. There is sanding involved just not a huge expensive amount of it. They are also bright anodised, which does make them slightly brighter than the original. The idea is to make poor wheels much nicer, not make them perfect as per what Nick (early911) does

I can do them for £50-55. Detailing is extra, or do your own.

I have tried to take some close up pics.

The first shows a close up of the style/type of finish, there are obviously still some marks as the wheel was pretty bad to start with, but once detailed it will look very presentable.


The next picture shows the overall results from two different wheel conditions. The one on the left was absolutely awful and beyond economic refurbishment as it was so badly pitted - which is why is was painted in thick paint when I got it. To get all those pits out would mean a lot of machining and metal removal. The fuch on the right was in poor condition, which (I think) would now look fine once on a car. Please remember this process does not suddenly make them perfect, it just makes them much more presentable, and they are also freshly anodised and thus protected.

Thanks Alan, they look very nice in deed!
But please, explain one or two things:

-Usually, when a wheel is in such a bad condition, it's sometimes bent (I don't know the correct english term to describe it, but "eliptical" is close enough!) as well. You have to straighten it first, right?

-These guys that done my wheels, somehow manage to fill the "holes" with aluminium, when they repair the dents. Don't you usually do that?

-That 50-55 GBP price is for each wheel, correct?

The ones that have been welded will show badly when anodised.

The processes I have described is not referring to fixing bent rims or welding damaged rims. I can get both done but there is a fine line between fixing slightly bent and really bent wheels. Also, as Nick says if you have any welding done it will show up when they are anodised. This is what I think you are referring to when taking about "filling holes".

You are also correct on the cost, that price is per wheel.

and here is one of those wheels I have just detailed (using Satin black).

I will try and take some pics of this wheel with a perfectly restored wheel from my 70 S to show the difference in final finish. But for most purposes it looks great.
