jacking points ..wayne dempsey or josh sadler who is correct

can any one clarify this ?
the first book i bought after buying 911 was wayne dempseys 101 projects which clearly says its okay to jack the rear up from under the sump lifting the car via the engine but ive just bought 911 and porsche world as it has a lengthy article on pre 73 but josh sadler of auto farm is quoted as saying it is incorrect to jack up from under the engine and can be a cause of oil leaks from the crankcases

??? any one got a view either way

My engine man is porsche trained and worked at Autofarm and Tuthils and he always jacks up the car from the sump plate.

I sometimes jack the join between engine and box with a block of wood between jack and motor, but I prefer to use the arb mounts at the back and the suspension mounts at the front. There is a huge amount of opinion out there on jacking.

I'm with John: it's around there that the engine/box balances nicely for removal. I think the box is the important bit though, just to take any spot loads out.

Even so, I never like jacking the rear of a 911 up, and am always a bit happier when it has made it safely onto the axle stands (torsion bar covers).

In theory it can cause the two halves of the crankcase to move ever so slightly causing a leak to start but I know lots of mechanics who do it and I have also when required.

I do it , and have never seen even a pukka Porsche mechanic who did not do it.

I like to catch the join between engine and box.
