Oil Tank Position ??

Post by Cortina »

Did anyone ever fit (say on a modified rally car) the oil tank in the front (eg luggage compartment or ?) of an early 911 ? (better weight distribution and some other advantages I can think of)
A bit like many Escorts in reverse (engine in front - dry sump oil tank in boot) ... if that makes sense.

Hello Alan.

Its not without problems as you might expect.

the one which is practically insoluble is the oil starvation on prolonged braking.

Slick tyres can get up to 1.5G which is like almost standing the car on its nose.

Oil will not flow uphill unless pumped!

One partial solution provided the braking is not overly prolonged is an Accusump, or even a large tank bolted onto the engine like on the GT£.

'm working on this.

Kind regards
david

Thanks , I see the problem - but remember it's for rallying , not racing - no slicks allowed (70 profile tyres in fact !) .. don't know how much this would help ?

cheers

Oh, you can get away with it OK..

The load on the bearings is least when braking...the sudden application of throttle is what bashes the bearings which have lost the hydarualic cushion..

On many cars I have thrashed over the years(!) the odd blink of oil light is an expected fact of life.

Regular bearing replacement and crank polish seems to keep them sweet..

But is not ideal obviously.

Kind regards
David
