Help fitting Headlining

Post by 9Torsion »

Can any one help, as you can see from my other listings I am restoring my Carrera 3. I have one major job which may causes problems, fitting the headlining. Does anyone have and clues or tips when fitting headlining?

Regards

I followed the Haynes, which pretty much covered it for me. Get yourself some bull dog clips! :)

When i did the headlining in my Bug, I used some special trim clips to hold the trim in place. Not sure what they are called. They were U section clips with small barbs to hold them in place probably 5mmx4mm and 4mm thick made of spring steel.

I would check with a trimmer such as southbound, they will know what they are/stock them

Just done mine. As other posts say; bulldog clips (assorted sizes) and good glue - I used dunlop thixo something. I started by cutting the new headliner shape to approx same size as the old one but with a good margin for error! I also cut out the hole for the sunroof before I put the lining in - if I do it again I think that I would cut the sun roof hole after the headlining is in place.
The key to it is to keep tensioning and pull out any creases.
When it was all in place I had to go very carefully to find the screw holes for the sunvisor bits - I used a thick needle which would go through the perforations to find the holes!
Took about 3 days of gradual tensioning but well worth doing - it looks great especially when you compare it with the old one which was filthy.

I like doing headliners and have done quite a few now. The trick is take your time. "Measure twice and cut once". I personally think sunroof cars are easier as there are no headliner bows. I also do not like the small U clips as sometimes they can tear the headliner.

It doesn't take long if you have done a few.

In case it helps I have a few pics

Starting _ rough fit

Get it pulled out (I use a heat gun or hot lamp)

Do the front before the rear and make sure it all lines up. I have used several kits where the the rear sections are not a good fit, so make sure they fit well.

All done, hopefully looks nice and original

Thanks Alan. That's one of my post Christmas jobs - just ordered all the bits - so you photographs will be a big help.

With the non sunroof cars, is it obvious where the wire bows and ends go?

Hi Bob,

Yes it is pretty clear where they go. There is also a rubber "foot" which goes over the end of each bow. Just put the bows in the new headliner and rough fit it, then use the clips to pull it out. A trick I also use is to glue small sections (once you are happy with the fit) in opposing areas, rather than glue in a continuous circle. This helps keep the tension across the headliner.

Cheers

Hi,

I have never had any done, but I don't see why not, and I can find out if needed. Usually sun visors clean up quite well.

Cheers

hi alan

no problem if you have not done yourself, its just that, mine are a bit tired and one of them feels like its broken (mirrors cracked too.... )

they are cream on one side and black on the other and in my limited investigations are not available so i thought about having new ones done in leather

when i get the seats re-covered I'll ask the trimers

thanks for replying

Does this mean you dont use the small metal clips? Couldnt see them in any of your pics, Do you just rely on the glue to hold it?
