Engine noise at low rpm

Morning all,

Just started to pick up on a engine noise at low rpm, say up to 1800rpm. Totally impossible to describe, but 'donk donk donk donk' (fading out and increasing slightly in pitch) is as close as I can get!

It's not very loud, but it wasn't there before and it sounds expensive.

For those that have heard Brendan's car at CLM it's something like that, although this is faint and can't be heard at idle or when blipping.

Any thoughts? It's currently freaking my wallet out every time I drive the car and coupled with this: http://www.ddk-online.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=11662 Makes me think that something is going to blow

Hi Gary,

It is very hard diagnose noises, especially over the internet, but before panicking try to locate the noise, even if it roughly, is it bottom end, is top end and so on. Use an engine stethoscope, you can get them from machine mart for a few ££. You may fine its something simple.

Let us know how this goes, and we can work on from there.

A couple of things Gary, never listen to the engine until it is fully warmed up and you may want to record the sound at a specific RPM and analysis it on a computer to see if it's every revolution (bottom end) or every other revolution (top end). And one last thing .... You'll be a long time dead....so just drive it

I think my engine noise paranoia threashold is really low!

I guess it's just that since ingesting various bits of the carb at Le Mans I've not driven it more than about 250 miles, so I just waiting for the consequences

It's a new noise, so something has changed, that's what worries me

One thing's for sure: Brendan doesn't suffer from Engine Noise Paranoia

Hope you locate the noise, Gary: if you've not got a stethoscope you can use a large screwdriver pressed to the suspected area: push your ear to the handle end: it works quite well, although a bit annoying if you push the driver blade into the fan whilst the handle is in your ear. It really stings ....
