2.4 T Carb options

Afternoon all,

Are we all feeling good today after our journey home

Need your opinions: Following my small 'thermal event'

at Classic Le Mans I'm thinking about my options.

To get me back on the road at minimum cost I need a RH triple Zenith and an original style airbox. Obtaining one may be a challenge, although the www will get a bashing later for some research! Second option maybe saving up for a pair of Webers, which a certain (Italian is must be said) trader at CLM was passionately selling their benfits to me.

Any thoughts from the group or does anyone have any spares? No budget is available at the moment to repair it, but I want to understand what I can do next.

My current diagnosis of the mini fire was that one of the floats had stuck open and been pumping vast quanities of fuel into the venturis and the eventual ignition in the inlet ports was too much for carb bodies and airbox to cope with. Hence the air straighteners have melted and the carb body distorted (hence the throttle jamming open outside the Carrefour, which was nice

).

Thanks to all for sympathy on the day, still had a cracking weekend, but it would be nice to come home in my own car from a DDK event at least once!

Gary: it was only late in the event that I heard what had happened: very sorry not to have had the chance for a proper chat, but glad to hear that the incident did not get out of hand, and that it's just some parts you need, and not another car.

Hope you get it sorted soon: I'll keep an eye/ear open for anything that might fit the bill.

Cheers Barry, it was all contained in the air box so no real drama, could have been much much worse, so I'm thankful for that!

Eeek - Scary ! Glad it survived. I'd heard that you'd had an incident, but not exactly what. Hope you get it sorted soon. If you need to borrow anything from mine, its sat under a sheet in the garage waiting bodywork repairs.
How about Throttle bodies ? and EFI ? Perhaps a step too far from the classic two triple choke carbs, but a Jenvey setup (or even motorbike TB setup) should yield a similar looking and sounding configuration, with the advantage of tweakability. Just an idea...

Tim you ought to set up your own EFI conversion workshop, you're always trying to convince folk the benefits of EFI. I for one would certainly convert back to a more tunable modern EFI setup but I certainly don't have the 'transferable skills' for this kind of work, even if I try hard it would just end up in a pile of bits.

I'd love the idea of motorbike throttle bodies and would like to put the 912e back to EFI, but a sale of it is looking quite (ish) imminent.

Thanks for the kind offer of a loan, that would be fantastic.

One RH carb please!!!! I think I can bodge the airbox for now by cutting out the lower distorted section.

If you could send it to me I will obviously fully refund all your postage costs plus a drink! I was about to post up about cancelling my trip to the Northern event, but maybe now I can still go!

I have considered EFI, but I too will end up with a pile of bits! Once you get it working on yours Tim I'll blatantly copy the set up

Out of interest can you still get Weber or Zenith carbs? If so how much are they?

Hello there!

No and no I'm afraid...only secondhand ones.

Which invariably need ultrasonic cleaning and often rebushing etc..

Yes,they are...a million times better than Webers..

But mfi may still be better....and efi defintely is..

In my opinion PMOs are value for money. I bought new PMO 46s for my car and luv em. Richard at PMO used to sell Webers, until he decided to upgrade the design and hence the birth of PMOs. The main advantage are the fact that they are new and also the bushes are actually bearings and also the float level windows are useful. PMOs use the same jets as webers.

I'd love a set of PMOs, but can't really justify half the value I paid for the car for some carbs...

EFI thoughts are entering my head. Tim, you have a lot to answer for...
