RAC just called to say we want £xxxx to bring your car back. They are claiming the car can't be rolled so breaks the policy. I and the garage have said they are lying. I've also pointed out to them they have already sent a contract to return the car (which I signed)

I've used them for years, and have made one 'claim' which was perfect.
However, I have never read a clause like that!

A contract is a contract, check that small print carefully.

What is their definition of a non rolling car ?

Are they on site saying this or just making the assumption from afar ?

Ridiculous really if it can be winched onto a transporter then it’s a rolling car surely

Actually the car can be driven short distances. It's just another unneeded stress. I have a plan B but really hope not to need it.

The email I have from them is pretty clear. Needless to say I filled in the form and they have confirmed (ages ago)

I think this is a old fashion shake down.

That's disgraceful. No wonder so many view insurance as theft.

A develop today. I called about 13:30 and got a call back at 18:00.

We had a less animated conversation. It appears that the policy with Hagety has a limit of £2500 on it. Which is why they were adding an excess of 45xx (approx). Clearly that number made me quite upset. The excess has been reduced to £22xx. Still a very big number. Strange that it changed so much. Affectively this means that recovery not near Calais is always going to have an excess. I think next time I will buy extra insurance.

I've asked them to try to reduce the excess or if they can get the to Calais without an excess then I take over.

That’s terrible from hagerty …. Tbf don’t think I’ve checked the wording on my classic line breakdown policy recently

I have never trusted UK insurance policy for European breakdown cover, have always taken RAC/AA overseas cover.

AA is off the table when the car is over 10 years, so I think RAC is the only real option, stand to be corrected.

Not cheap but still in the hundreds of £.

Don't you just love insurers. We pay hefty premiums in good faith and they find technicalities to shirk responsibility when you need them most. Rodents

I’ve used the classic line service before , admittedly back in 2008 ish I think when the car spat a rocker shaft in Rouen…. Couldn’t really fault the service and car came a week or so later

Just checked my policy, it has a £3000 per year cap for uk and euro breakdown

Very sorry to hear that Neil, additional hassle you definitely don’t need. I’ll be checking my policy as well and assume it is subject to some sort of cap.

Hope they drop the excess further. What’s the totol cost of recovery according to RAC?

Yes it’s prompted me to check my classicline policy.

Once you taken the initial breakdown recovery and any potential storage costs into account I doubt 3k is enough to get a car back to Blighty?

Although Alps/Classicline did recover a mates car from Germany a couple of years ago with no issues.

I’ve also got cover with my nationwide plus account so another option should a serious breakdown occur.

One interesting thing is both CL/Alps. and the AA/nationwide policies state the car must be maintained to manufacturers schedules…

I know most of our cars are well fettled but I’m not sure what they expect of 40/50/60 year old cars?

Looked at some of the stand alone policies and they cap the cost of all sort of things including recovery etc . Don’t think there is a gold plated answer to these things

Eg : GEM classic breakdown

I’m with Adrian Flux / Trinity Lane and there is a £5k limit.

Just checked my Locktons policy and there is no cap. They will recover after 48 hours. There are limits on emergency accomodation, hire car etc, but nothing on repatriation. Which is a relief given my cars track record.
