Perhaps the question should be, why does a sportomatic have to be so much cheaper than an equivalent manual to achieve a sale?

As I stated in another recent thread:



Although the 'market' decided (some years ago) that Sporto models were worth significantly less than manual models in equivalent condition, I believe this to be an ill-informed decision based on ignorance.

How many people who dismiss/denigrate Sporto models have actually driven one - even more so one that has been maintained correctly so that the Sporto transmission works as intended ?

Over the years I've had the opportunity to drive a few Sportos (from memory all were E models) & am a big fan - a 2.2E Sporto (if correctly set-up/maintained) is a great combination.

One of the problems which has added to the 'myth' is finding someone with the relevant expertise with Sporto transmissions but within DDK we are lucky enough to have at least two such people - Chris Turner (butzsi) & Berny Tester (Berny) - plus probably Mike Bainbridge (but I'm not certain).

Agree Mike (210bhp) that the sporto box is what is holding it back.

Talk about stating the bleeding obvious! Of course that's why it's not sold, my point is that if was was priced to reflect it had the less desirable gearbox it will sell, it's not rocket science.

Andy makes a similar point quite often. Not just about sportos, but about different makes, models and specs.

And for good reason. He's owned and driven more cars than most of us

Variety is the spice of life, and you shouldn't knock something till you've tried it.

Valuable or not, "correct" spec or not, concours or not, best thing to do is buy a car that speaks to you.

The value / market debate will constantly ebb and flow. But will remain constant in being more than a little boring.

Even if Frank's car had a manual (901/911/914/915/g50/...) box in it, it would still be "slab sided" in some people's eyes, and original narrow perfection in the eyes of others.

It's a little easier with a 914, at least in one aspect: matching numbers.
Even the factory didn't bother recording the engine numbers properly for a lot of the cars, and as for the gearbox number... you'd be lucky!

I had missed this car was a 2.2, so my limited 911 knowledge the car would have a dog-leg 901 box if it was a manual.
I thought it a 2.4, hence a 915 box; sorry.

I really could not agree more with 23e and Andy on this car and any other classic car (and boat, and bike, and plane and camera etc).

If the item you see is what you fancy, can afford (approved by The Boss) and you want to drive it rather than Bank it then it is your fortune to be looking at such a car!

Values/desirability (for whatever reason) will always be 'beauty-in-the-eye-of-the-beholder' influenced by events and trends locally and worldwide.

There are times I wish my old 911 had a Sporto instead of the clunky resisting and awkward 915...
I could be sure of that if I'd ever driven one!
