maverick
noun

2. an unbranded calf or yearling.
Origin mid 19th century: from the name of Samuel A. Maverick (1803–70), a Texas rancher who did not brand his cattle.

Ford Escort I think is correct for the estate. here was also an Esquire in the same design, not sure of the differences.
Both before my time, but loads in the scrap yards when there were some!
You're right about the Escort - it was the basic 'estate' version. The up market one (it was all relative!) was called the Squire (without the first 'e').
I don't know if there were any technical differences between the Escort and the Squire - I do remember the Squire had some small wood mouldings along the side of the body to give it a pseudo 'woody' look.

My dad made a "Squire" out of a 100E van, I learned to drive in it off road around 1966 when I was 15. I still remember the registration PYH 180, I don't suppose it is still around. Painted in Iris Blue, I assume a Ford colour, but who knows.
