DDK - Die Deutschen Klassiker

On the way to Ingolstadt we visited Wurzburg. A lovely town. Ingolstadt was very interesting too. There is an impressive fort/castle. Where is appears Charles de Galle was imprisoned during WW1. I checked for oil under the car and didn't find any

I decided to put E95 in the car. They have different grades of petrol here. E10, E95 without additives and the E95 with extras we have in the UK. The E95;is only a few cents more than E10. Additionally I checked the air in the tyres and the fronts were too soft. Now I have 30/34 (2/2.4 bar).

Unfortunately, left the good weather behind and had a wet drive. However, the car has been running cooler. Not sure if tyres, petrol or weather (perhaps all 3)

After 2 hours we stopped in Passus but the rain made it a short stay. We found a nice coffee shop and visited the church. Worth a longer visit.

Next was 3, and a bit, quite wet hours driving to Graz. Through some amazing mountains and tunnels. We paid 19 euros in tolls. I'm sure that would of been 60 euros in Switzerland.

The hotel we are staying at is directly on the town square and a relic from the past. This being Austria almost nothing is open so it will be a quiet evening

Interesting journey Neil. Somehow your version of Europe seems pretty deserted, whether by luck or judgement. I like the injection of drama, the ‘will the car have an oil leak or won’t it’ dimension, always heart stopping, and I’m enjoying seeing your glasses in different locations. (Are they new or have I just not been paying attention?) But I think we should always be told what you’re eating, (Mrs B’s on board sandwich?) and what cake you chose in the cafe? It’ll be interesting to see how the 356 go down in its birthplace. Safe journey, have fun and keep up the reports.

Do you have lots of hats the same or is it just one hat?

Sam, only one hat on this journey, but a selection at home. Interesting point about the food Jeremy. Mrs B, and I, have been on diets since November. I'm back to my pre DDK (or marriage day weight) of 70kg. Not quite my race/fighting weight but about a 14kg reduction. Our taste and relationship with food has changed. The larger portions in Germany didn't suit us. At the cafe stop I resisted temptation. No cake just coffee.

Finding something good to eat in Germany/Austria on Sunday evening can be challenging. The hotel recommended a traditional Austrian place 20m from their entrance. The menu was evaluated by the partners. The junior member approved. Having done some www research and concluded there wasn't much else available. Especially since, the previous day, they had consulted the Michelin Guide and attempted to book a few places but nowhere was open. Senior management proposed a foot based search. I can't say that the junior partner was fully committed, and excited, about this idea but joined in for the good of the company.

After 30mins the search was abandoned and we returned to the original restaurant. One of the partners, may claim, this is because of lack of enthusiasm and effort on the junior partner's part. Senior management was quieter than normal during the meal perhaps preparing their CV or a written warning for the junior partner?

This morning we drive through the country of the greatest cyclist that ever lived (discuss?) and also the home of a 'gentleman' that asked for a fight in a jazz club when I asked him not to talk during the 2nd half (not the same person)!!

Yes I walk up the stairs. About 10-15 mins of heavy breathing. My knee always hurts more on the way down.

We are in Zadar, Croatia! We have driven through a storm to get here. Passed the largest lighting bolt I have ever seen

We stopped off at Plitvice Lakes for a walk. Amazing place.

Brilliant trip, Neil. Is this the end point, or are you heading further south? I'd really like to cross that new bridge that bypasses the Bosnian border.
