Now over Adam Petty bit can someone tell me price of engine as I am very interested.

Have one in my S90 Road car and it’s ideal for rallies and road trips.

175 bhp.

Have another for my special built at Pace and that’s 207 bhp.

Well this thread has certainly opened my eyes as to how people spend their hard earned money.

On a personal level, I could never justify the £27,000 bill for building the original twin spark motor.
If I had spent that sort of money then I would be scared to drive the car.
But that’s just my opinion. I am of course very low down on the ladder of life, socially, financially and intellectually.

A 356 in decent shape costs 60 k plus,plus so spending 27 k on an engine to make it better although not historically correct is a matter of personnel decision and questioning why you want the toy to start with!

It’s all about how much dosh you are prepared to spend on toys .

If you wait the prices will probably reduce of cars/bits then it makes them available to more people.

What car do you have Simon?

Since this is a discussion without rules. Can I point out that you can buy Andy's 2.4l (might even be 2.5 spec) engine for less £27 (if I remember correctly)? Produces more power, is cheaper and many DDKer's have seen how well Andy's car runs.

Now having a 6 cylinder in your 356 isn't for me but might appeal to outlaws?

A standard rebuilt turnkey 1600 motor is £12k+

A running 1600 is £8k+

'Project' motors are £5k+

Machining, blue printing & building labour time adds up, then Dyno time etc. etc. & there's not much change from 15k. A hot VW motor is the way to go for. It's effectiveness, though they're not 'pure' & that cheap anymore.

Yes gone are the days when these engines were cheap. My engine was bgt for $3.5 as a fresh pellow engine.

However, I suspect that your prices are maybe top end prices? I suspect that engines would be built for less. About 10 years ago I needed an engine for my 912 and was offered a turn key by Andy for 7k ( as you have pointed out it would probably cost double that now) I ended up playing 2.5k for a rebuild
