DDK - Die Deutschen Klassiker

I've decided to have the car dipped prior to starting the welding! I'm going to have to buy lots of new parts - exactly what I'll need I won't know until after the dipping process. If any of you guys can help with the parts please see my thread in the wanted section.

There's a guy on Pelican cutting up a 69 S. Just thought I'd mention it as there could be some bits there for you.

Starting to strip the car - yep it's a bad as I first thought - quite poor around the rear inner wings rear slam.


Plenty of work to do



Front has been so poorly "repaired" in the past - seriously bodged - why do people do it, suppose it was the way it was done back in the day. There is so much fiberglass enough to make a boat.

Good on you for trying to save this car!

Please don't take offence, but considering the vehicle isn't with its original engine and the amount of work required, is this going to be a viable project financially? I know about the rewards of completing a lengthy restoration in terms of personal achievement , but considering the financial investment required etc... Respect to you for your commitment though.

Loz - keep up with the encouragement! I think everyone starts out thinking, hey! this has got to be worth £???k at when finished - and yes possibly it will be. But firstly it's a rare car, and I want to own, drive and enjoy it. If it happens to be worth a lot of money to someone who is prepared to offer it in 10 yrs from now then so be it. Can't see the value of 66 RHD 911's dropping - can you? Yes original engine would be good - nice to have the car totally original - I'm still looking for it.........

the dismantle continues - nasty repair, if that's what you could call it around the base of the upper steering column. Surprisingly the metal just past this area is fairly sound.....


Then on to the back of the car and the horrors unfolded, literally... No sills to be found - inner or outer just this boat like fiberglass around everything... I mean everything more fiberglass around rear torsion bar and inner rear wing...... serious stuff this fiberglass. We also found layers of tin between fiberglass and the original body steel!!

When you get it dipped make sure you have a large tray underneath to catch the bits...

More concerned that when it come back up from the tank there's only the roof - or worse an empty cage! Seriously the car has some truly awful areas - I've scrapped better cars that this before - but some areas are quite good (well....within reason) so we'll see what happens! Expecting to do quite a few hours welding it all back together!

Reminds me of the red UK 'first 911' project a few months back (what happened to that?)

I would be so concerned to get a good structure back unless so so many panels are removed and the shell started again.

Really interesting and i look forward to your progress getting it back from 6 feet under.

Thanks - i'll need all the support (and help / advice) as I go along. What seems to have happened is that the car has been stored for over 30 years and the front and rear have suffered very badly with central (main tub) remaining virtually in tack albeit with some rust. Plan is to replace the floor, inner & outer sills and get the central section sound again, then to tackle the front and rear sections. will either make a jig or borrow a celette jig. Will buy as many new panels as I can get and make the rest. My fabricator is very good - and the car doesn't scare him (scares the f**k out of me!)

These 'deep' restorations are fascinating and make me count my blessings when I poke around under my 73T that took 8 months of DIY welding back in 1988...thing were rotten then, but nothing like this project.
The DIY patching is the best for me due to the skills needed, good to see.

Seriously, all the best with this one.

This car looks like an ideal candidate for pyrolisis and dipping, the problem is that it will come back in a small box. Brave doesn't adequately describe this restoration.
