Update: well there's good news, and there's bad news.

Good: the driveshaft came off easily, and the inner joint was bone dry, full of rust and old dried C.V. grease, and had loads of play, so diagnoses complete. Outer one has a fraction of play (10 - 15 thou I'd guess?), but moves freeely and smoothly around it's normal range.

Bad news ... you've guessed it, the later joints are very different (assuming I've been sent the ones that Dave Mac intended, I suppose.)

Now the old ones are off, they have been measured as best I can:

Old ones:

O/D 108mm
Thickness of body: 30mm.
PCD of four mounting bolt holes: 94mm (appx)
Diameter of 4 mounting bolt holes: 10mm
Diameter of roll-pin holes: 8mm
Spline diameter on shaft 31mm
Spline number: 28

New ones:

O/D 100mm
Thickness of body: 32mm
PCD of four mounting bolt holes: 86mm (appx)
Diameter of 6 mounting bolt holes: 8mm
Diameter of roll-pin holes: n/a
Spline diameter on shaft 27.6mm (apprx)
Spline number: 25

So all in all, oh bummocks! I'm really keen to get the car back on the road this weekend, as I've got a workshop project that needs to reach a certain point by wednesday. Oh well, looks like I'll be pounding the phones tomorrow.

BTW, do these 'new' ones match the spec for a later type, or is it possible that Dave Mac have simply sent a completely (unrelated) one? I.e. are the later ones really a bit smaller, and use a driveshaft that has much smaller splines?

Double bummocks: I wish I'd Steve's post a bit closer: so I'd imagine that what I've actually got here is the slightly later six bolt, and I need the 85- (M10) six bolt?

Is this correct?

Hi Barry let me know if you wanna borrow one of my joints or my whole shaft, could post it down to you tmrw for sat delivery? May be expensive to post the whole shaft though.

As you know I certainly wont be needing them in a while.

Let me know.

Also hope you find a solution to getting the 10mm 6 bolt late joint on the early shaft else my plans for getting the G50 connected up are screwed.

Does anyone have a spec book to check the spline no:/diameter of the late 10mm 6 bolt joints?

Thank you Steve: I'll do the rounds in the morning and try to get organised.

First port of call will be Dave Mac: when he looked up these joints, he was clearly looking in a spec-book of some sort, so we should be able to confirm those spline details. I'm hopeing that he may be able to take these (100 mm) ones back as well.

Nevertheless, if someone could confirm tonight that we're looking at a later six bolt/M10/ 85 model year onwards???

Thanks David: I'm going to touch base with Dave Mac in the morning and see if they can compare specs.

The ideal situation is that now if got the old one in front of me, we can compare specs and sort something out. I'll probably know by not much after nine, and will assess the situation then.

Gary, if you see this, could you confirm that it was a 85- joint that you employed?

Also, looking at my joints, the roll pin is 8mm, rather than ten: ring any bells? Not a problem if that is the case, as I could turn a stepped pin (with a radiused transistion) to give some sort of location. I'm assuming that the clamping pressure is what gives the drive, and that the pin is purely there for initial alignment?

Ok just done some pelican hunting, 85> 911/930 joints are 108mm od with 28 splines same as the early joints. These must be the ones gary used on his car. Not sure about thickness but carnt see that been a major issue?

http://www.blindchickenracing.com/How_t ... ts_101.htm

Seems thouse joints are 40mm thick, will this cause any issues?

The bit with the splines in the centre that joints to the shaft is 28mm thick, can you get a measurement on your barry?

Thanks Steve: there's certainly some in-and-out margin, whether it'd absorb 2 x 10mm of extra thickness, I don't know. Obviously this will depend on where the internal (splined) portion sits, which probably is central, in which case we'd be talking 2 x 5mm, which I'd assume would be fine. This also assumes that you're changing both inner and outer joints, which in your case I take it you're just doing the inner ones?

Hi Barry, sorry my suggestion has gone a bit wrong...

I'm sure if you talk to John MacMahon with those dimensions you have given he will be able to identify the error and send replacements.

I've just looked up my old receipt and it just says CV joint 2 off: £38 each

So that's no use...

OK, so now to confuse everyone :)

The LH driveshaft (the one I did originally in about 2003) has what appear to by 38mm thick joints, although you cannot measure directly due to the cap.

Part No. GKN 200400E 1 465

The RH driveshaft (done about a year later) has what appear to be 40mm thick joints. Unfortunately the part number on these is not stamped in as well and surface rust has taken it toll.

Part No. GKN 2300?00E 1 465

The missing number could be anything to be honest, maybe a 9

Both shafts were matched at the time to the shaft I took in with me, so I guess they have been odd for some time. This would stack up with the trailing arms being mis matched, the RH is a pre '72 and the LH the correct post '72. The damper mount on the RH is further forward and damper only just clears the driveshaft at full droop, the LH is some 10mm clear.

Hopes this clears it up!

Conclusion is you can use 40mm joints!

Brilliant: thanks Gary!

Next mini hurdle is to see what Dave Mac has got, and then if they've got some, whether they can get a saturday delivery ...

Update to follow ....

Just been digging on the GKN on line catalogue (gripping way to spend a Thursday night I know...) and the joints are listed as NLA...
