All 4 cylinder cars from 1970-73 came with painted side panels and black trim, all the 6 cylinder cars had vinyl and polished trim. In 1974, this is model years by the way, the vinyl and polished trim became standard. It could be specified as an extra on the early 'fours', I can't remember the actual reference number but it was generally known as the appearance pack. It's interesting, hang on must take my anorak off, if you look at the first brochures and publicity pictures nearly all the cars had the vinyl and the ones that did'nt were missing the black trims. For me I like both options, it does make the car look a little 'taller' without the vinyl. My car never had the vinyl from new and that's the way it will stay. It has to be said those bits of vinyl on the side do trap water when the glue starts to break down. But it's all down to personal preference.
