advice needed on gear change

Post by porker914 »

Having had both the engine and gearbox totally out so I could do the Hell Hole welding. When i put the engine and gearbox back in with new clutch I am having real trouble getting into 4th and 5th. I have tried the old beetle method of moving the plate that holds the gear linkage down and that has helped a little but i still have real trouble getting into those gears. Now i know that when you put the engine and gearbox back in they will never actually be in exactly the same position as before but whats the solution?

A friend of mine who has an early 911 said that on his car the shafts are splined where the gear stick links to the long shaft to the gearbox and he saggested moving to a different spline?

Any ideas anyone?

I have found in the past that when I've lost a plane (either 1st + reverse or 4+5) its down to the adjustment under the inspection plate between the seats by the firewall.
When you move the gearstick for 4th /5th it is rotating the linkage shaft and your shaft might not be rotating quite enough -if you adjust too far you'll loose 1st + reverse
My 901 is a tailshifter and there is a clamp/linkage under this inspection plate and if its slightly rotated out of a precise position then I'll loose a plane.
If you have a sideshifter then I think the linkage is in the engine bay side of the firewall

Think it's Item 26

I have engraved a mark on the shaft + coupling now so the original position can be quickly found again on reassembly.
