I thought maybe you'd welcome seeing pictures of the car pretty much at the low point.
Though the shell was quite bare it was decided to do things thoroughly and chemically strip the whole car.
The immersion process removes all paint, sealants and underseals and very effectively removes all rust and filler.
Any corrosion damage and earlier repairs can be confidently identified.
Unfortunately mild steel very quickly has a habit of tarnishing in that unprotected state (especially during a damp UK winter).
Try and forget that old adage that "if it's rusty around the torsion bars consider scrapping it".

Work has commenced on eradicating the rust.
Now the replacement panels can be welded in and once all the repairs are done the shell will be dipped again and electrophoretically primed.

Wow i have to say that's a big project.. Good luck with that one Paul.. I am sure it will come though fine. Just abit more work than normal. Like you say at the low point at the mo.. But I am sure the fine chaps here will keep you all motivated though the low points..

At the end of the day it'a RHD and you will get a really nice car at the end of it.

Why a new roof section?

and any luck on the wheels? when ever I see any I will PM you.. where those ones I sent the link over to.. any good?

Thanks Mark.
Incredibly even the roof had rusted through in places but the real reason for the new roof panel was because I wanted rid of the sunroof.
As for the wheels, I'd like to run 7" & 9" Fuchs with an RSR finish.
Understandably the nines will be difficult to source and rather pricey. I'm looking. They'll turn up if I'm patient.
A couple of other options are 7 & 8's (with spacers) or even Minilites on the rear but I'm keen to go Fuchs all round.

enjoying watching this thread...keep the pictures coming. have you had any trouble getting parts? i've found with the 356 thats its the little (switches/rubber seals)bits that end up being the biggest headache to get hold of and costing the most

Knowing the cost of the parts and work to restore the shell I am doing (only needs scuttle, drivers floor edge, drivers A post and middle and outer sills for both sides - a lot less than you need) that is one expensive airfix kit! I have also gone for the same treatment process - dip, welding, re-dip, e-coat.

Keep up the good work, it'll look fantastic when done.

Do a search for Ecoat on this forum to find out what it involves. The full process is around £2000 and because of what it involves is not for the faint hearted. Contact me if you want to discuss it further.

Well, I've got myself some wheels and I'm delighted.
I really wanted genuine 9" Fuchs and they were always going to be difficult (and expensive) to find but some turned up on eBay in the US.
The exchange rate worked well for me and I got a complete set of 7"s & 9"s for what I'd have been prepared to pay just for the rears.

They are in lovely condition too. The seller had owned them since 1978 and they'd been stored for the last 22 years. He was good as gold and a real treat to deal with. Thanks Brad. Everywhere I turn in this early Porsche community I meet good guys.
