912 Starter / Wiring worries

Bought my LHD 1968 912 targa two weeks ago, and it's a little lazy starting. The battery is kicking out 12.7 volts, so I crawl under to check the starter. Using John Muir's VW trick I run a karge screwdriver across the terminals and the starter spins away merrily. So far so good.

Whilst under the car I notice a stray wire - red/green stripe - threadbare and connected to nothing. I do have a wiring diagram, but it's in black & white without a key.

Two questions:

1: Am I right in thinking there must be a weak point somewhere in the wiring between the starter & the ignition?
2: What is the stray wire for?

Any help would be very gratefully received. I have time over the Christmas break to sort this, otherwise it'll be off to the professionals.

hello, Dave.

The starter wiring is always a bit marginal!

Often the ignition switch is shonky.

I'd find and clean and siliconise all the terminals involved, then fit a relay in the ingintionswitch to starter lead near to the starter istself.

I have one of those as well, cant find it on the wiring diagram so I just folded it up and taped it out of the way, everything works Ok. I have put a high torque starter on works a treat far better, the the original was always a bit slow.
