shot blasting questions...

Has any one done this on their car.. I know shot blasting a car is and can be a bit of a risk. Mainly because of the high pressure the media needs to move though the gun ( eg lifted from the store bottle ) It also generates heat which is something people foget about as well.

there is a company in west or east sussex called metal treatments and they use a treatmend use in the aircraft industry and it is plastic media they have quoted me £800-1000 for the car.. So what I did was strip the main part of the car and I was looking to either use them for the small bits in the nooks and cranies. Or do it my self.

So what I am asking is has any one done it on their car at home with a DIY shot blaster for the small bits and what sort of result have they had. I have a compressor and I have seen machine mart do shot balster guns for about £25-30

I was also looking into the idea of doing my own vapour balsting using hot water and very fine grit to see if this would cleanup engine cases and the like to a nice high quality finish.. I stupidly chucked out a bag 10KG of glass grit I had no use for and now i need it for this little project I hate chucking stuff out but after 5 sheds the future Mrs Collins is putting her foot down and said no to any more sheds

Mark, very dusty work, you really need a huge supply of compressed air to do a good quick job.
These little guns may remove paint and very light surface rust but that's about it.
Best off investing in a die grinder, good DA sander and some 36 grit !!

Cheers Nick it's only for small area's where I just cant get the DA in.. like in the section behind the front wing , you know where there is like a large'ish compartment you just can't get to..... and other places like that..

Very, very dusty work. It gets everywhere. Has anybody used those air-needle scalers?

Yes, but not for bodywork: they're incredibly aggressive and really for gates, cast iron, thick plate etc: more the sort of thing you would use on agricultural machinery (like the TR I suppose ).

The little DIY guns are very useful for tiny areas (I've got one) but as has been said, you need a huge amount of air, the media goes everywhere, and the time you've saved gets used cleaning up again . I did have a Guyson blast cabinet, but even running two compressors wasn't enough, so I moved it on again.

might have to get a company to finish the last bits or hire a Air comp road side one... no probs no lack of air then

Or just use the blaster outside the garage and try and shield the rest of the car from getting grit everywhere. prob want a full face gaurd too as it stings
