Steve - yes, the '73.5 T's were CIS-equipped.

This looks pretty suspicious to me. The 'north west expert' wouldn't happen to be born2bfast would it?

But as Andy says, you can't put CIS on a motor with an S cam - it will run like a dog.

And (CIS anorak here), that's CIS from a post '74 car, not the 73.5T - you can tell that by where the injectors sit.

also the build date stamped on the rear doorjam is 11/72

so this adds up

I'm concerned about what I have heard here but I do trust the guy I am dealing with but Ihavent pushedf him too far as he did tell me the MFI had been replaced with CIS

but from what I'm hearing here its not possible

by the way its not the above dealers I'm dealing with it is a respected porsche specialist, who owns dozens of early 356s, many speedsters etc

It is possible, but either won't run right with the S-cams or the cams have been changed too. Its mostly down to the cams that give the S the characteristic performance isn't it....

Perhaps Ian can help with this one... don't the early CIS heads have a cutout for the injector as the injector sits much lower down... a la MFI ?
In which case pehaps the heads have been changed too ? I'm not sure on this one, just a nagging doubt I have....

I think the best case senario is that it may have the original crankcase but for some strange reson someone rebuilt it with the later 2.4 CIS top end or maybe even the 2.7 CIS top end to get a displacement increase? either way it will cost quite a bit to source the right parts to put back to original.

If it has been rebult with the 2.7 top end wouldnt this actually result in loss of power compared to the 2.4S MFI, 165hp as opposed to the 190 for the 2.4 MFI-S ?

I think that I have read this somewhere before. But I thought that it was for a specific region like US Calif.

First I would check if the shell is 100% ie a real 'S' and not re-shelled. I would also like to see a pic of the engine number and make sure its a matching 'S' engine.
Then I'd ask who rebuilt the motor.. where and when? Maybe the cams have been changed...? Speak to the rebuilder... where is the original induction gone?

Mate if you can negotiate on the car and get the price down in accordance because its not in its original condition.

If its all good and its just got the wrong induction and perhaps cams and the money makes sense... might be a good buy.

suss it out tho..

This looks very suspicious to me.

For comparison there was an original colour aubergine (or possibly burgundy) 2.4s lhd for sale in the US approx one month ago. Matching numbers with engine built to 2.7 rs spec with low mileage, RS rear flares recaro seats ( I think). Long term owner and very few owners in total. Def looked all correct from pics and if so looked a peach of a car. Have a look on the early s registry and you will find it. Think it was for sale in California also. This car was $55,000

The pic of the engine you will see is totally different to the one you posted above and I think you should take the time to read up on the diff between an mfi and a cis system before going ahead.

Mike
