Fuel Tank vent

On my '73 911T I have a plastic vent pipe that comes off the top of the fuel tank and connects to the black vent box under the body scuttle (near side). From the black box a single plastic pipe comes back that connects into a 'Y' connector, then both pipes from the Y connector simpy vent out into the fresh air through body work holes. Is this the correct set up? It seems to leave a slight petrolly smell.
As an option I'm thinking of fitting an inline fuel vent valve to stop this smell.
Your thoughts or comments would be appreciated.

Hi John,

That sounds about right. I have seen a few different configurations but most have been messed around with over time.
I have attached a pic of an original set up from a 73 car. The tube vents down near the battery box.

of course, you could go US style with its 3 Y shaped connectors, additional vent chamber, charcoal container etc etc ... !!
Am just replacing all of the (dis-integrated) hoses on my new import and it doesn't seem to smell of fuel.

On my RHD car, as Alan mentioned, it vents near the battery box ... but i also do get petrol smells ... !! Mind you, the connection on the fuel tank came lose at BP 2 weeks ago and 5 litres flowed down the front and out of a drain hole. Expensive waste at the moment !! ..

I've now fitted a modern fuel tank vent value that allows air in but has a very slight resistance to allow fumes out. (expansion). I've also left the vent box on but disconnected it. Petrolly fumes seem much less now.
