912 wont start after long journey please help im stuck

Post by 512modulo »

hi all

just droveback from the nec classic car show to londonin my new 67 912. been stuck in traffic a bit. parked up and now the car wont start again.

i can hear the starter motor trying to turn over.

i have full power lights etc.

but the darn thing wont turn over.

any advice on what it could be ?
is it just hot?
any basics steps i should take to diagnose the fault?

any help would be appreciated.

thanks in advance

wont turn over

HI
Make sure engine turns over by hand and is not tight, check battery connections and connection at starter ,try another battery as starter current draw is heavy if all fails suspect starter motor.

Hi - are you saying the starter motor is turning, or just clicking / humming?

If you want to confirm the engine is 'moving' (ie not seized), you'll need to jack a wheel up at the back, put it in top gear with the ignition off and turn a road wheel and watch / listen for the pistons doing their thing.

If you take the distributer cap off, you'll see the rotor arm turning too (hopefully).

If the engine is capable of turning, you might have a jammed / failed starter or solenoid - if the engine won't physically turn, well, lets cross that bridge if we get to it...

just an update

now the engine has cooled it has decided to start so no seized engines,

the car was in lodon trafiic for a good hour after travelling for 100 miles on the motor way,

so why would the car not start if the engine is hot what sort of things would cause this as at the moment everything is ok again, ?

thanks

matt

If engine was not turning over i would still suspect starter,if however engine was turning over and not starting when hot then i would suspect
the heat from the engine now switched off and therefore no fan cooling it
has risen and warmed the carbs causing vapourization and affecting the float levels(just a thought)
