How do you tell if a car is matching numbers?

All.

I own a 1973 2.4E. The chassis number and engine number match the V5. Also the engine number is correct for a 1973 2.4E engine. Engine has all the correct parts on it. Car also has the right MFI unit, gearbox etc so it looks like the engine / drive train is original.

Also E engines have a reputation of being very robust so no reason to suspect an engine has been "grenaded" in the past and required replacement.

So does that mean it is a matching numbers car or is there a way of getting from Porsche the original engine number the car left the factory with?

I have no reason to suspect it's not matching nor any proof it is other than that stated above. Wondered how when people claim "matching numbers" they know for sure.

Porsche can supply ( for a cost of approx £65) a build info sheet that will have the original engine number on it.

My 2.4S is confirmed matching numbers

Hi Ian,

Without the build sheet there is nothing to prove it against. You have reviewed many of the ID indicators which are used to suggest if it is matching numbers. You can also review the vin number and engine number to see if they are in the same zone (ie- low/ high ID numbers).

Thanks that's exactly what I needed to know.

I shall contact Porsche and pay for a build info sheet. Hopefully that will confirm the original colour as well. I am 99% sure from the history the car used to be white, as it says on the V5, but woud like to make sure as the car is about to have a full respray.

Also be interested to see if it originally had a sunroof or not.

I sent a fiver (ish) to the DVLA who gave me all the V5's, including the first one which showed the original vin and engine numbers. If you do a search this has been discussed before.

The V5 thing is OK if your car is an original UK car, but if the car was imported many years after its production then it might not be of huge use

Original RHD UK car so it sounds like a fiver to the DVLA would be money well spent too. Going for the build sheet as well though as now I know these are available I am interested to know how the car was when it rolled out of the factory.

Sorry to hijack, but I got my V5 back today, and want to get the Porsche CoA (£65 approx) - where do I write to, and does anyone know exactly how much it is - does it apply to all cars, as mine was exported to the US ?

I need the CoA to prove it was manufactured 1/9/72 - 31/8/73 to get an 'L' reg, as it is currently on an incorrect 'M' reg.

You need to call Porsche GB head office in Reading. I can't remember the lady's name but you send the cheque to:

Trouble is I can't remember exactly how much it is. Phone them.

Yes forgot this only applies to UK reg'd cars. I seem to recall threads about contacting the DMV in whatever US state these nice, cheap, rust-free cars come from.

Can't have been white. Not a 73 colour for an E. Ivory or light ivory maybe.

As the V5 just says generic "White" you could be right. Also could have been changed to white at some time from whatever colour it started out as.

I believe white was introduced as a 73 colour where as ivory was for both 72 and 73. Are you saying white was not offered on E models but on say S and RS models only?
