Any 993 turbo guru's out there?
distinctly not a pre '73 question, but hey I've paid my dues, I'm allowed an off topic question now and then

you sound like just the man!
Looks like the Aubergine will be going to a far better place soon and I want to replace it with a newer version, am focussing on the 993 turbo, because a) its beautiful, b) its silly fast, c) air-cooled d) slightly more practical/reliable than a 2.4 (ok not much more I admit)
I was wondering if you have any tips on buying one? What are the pitfalls to look out for? Is there a stonkingly expensive service to avoid around the 50-75k mark? Any special options/colours that are uber desirable?

I am currently runing a 2.4 s as my daily , but when the salt comes i am into a Golt Gti of dubious age and basically undersealed ! The GT2 clubsport driven to and from but mainly ,i try hard to, on Track.
Early 3 0 /3.3 appeal to me aesthetically but are not the most pracitcal for gen purpose , they both need careful attention to brakes , especially the early model.......contrary to popular belief they work well when used often , ruuning gear as per age and engines fine ,my early car popped a rod at 213 000 miles ................cud hardly complain .............without intercooler not ideal for short runs, and both need achance to let turbos cool down before parking .................simply if u want and early car like any other Pork , service history , i think more who looked after it even and u get what u pay for .............i am even sick enough to like Slant noses for £ 30-35k u can get some wonderfully well maintained kit!
Sorry know nothing abt 965,so straight on to 993 tt................can be used anywhere , commuting tame as u like /straight to track day u ll have a ball ! engines and running gear to be treated like any 993 its just hotter ,in every sense , bigger brakes ,stronger wheel bearings ,biggerdrive shafts and everything P sell for Turbos has a mark up! Turbos no lag by this period .........or very little, last a good long tiime still benefit from cooling down , especially when tracked ,[just leave it running u ll hear the electric fans click in and out even after u ve turned it off]..............they are of course 4 wheel drive ,not my preference , and by now the 993 is well behaved enough that unless u pay no heed at all u dont need it !
I reckon on same principalof History £40k -50k u ll get what u pay for unless ur v unlucky ..................they all need driving ,IMO every 911 needs to be used or simply start rusting from inside out ..................i notice ur in Banking , if ur in The City and drink red wine available most lunch times me ..........anywhere near Cornhill.............

Hi, I have a 30000 Mile, '96 993 Turbo 4 and pretty much agree with Vic Cohen, my findings are as follows.... great everyday car, benefits from being used on a regular basis, its awesomely fast, most figures say 0-60 in 4.5 secs or thereabouts but original Autocar road test says 3.7 and 0-100 9.2, these figures are are more like it.. drinks petrol, tyres etc in large quantities if all the performance is used, though I dont find it suitable for a track day really, bit too heavy...on everything! (GT2 different story...) Its extremely well made, it looks great, its easy to drive and its worth at least as much as I paid for it 4 years ago. Oh and did I mention how quick they are..... I'm not selling it, but if you want a very reliable Yellow 2.7RS Spec early car with Webers...

Loom gets done free even now , screens tend to be v early 993 where no teflon tape fitted and eventually flexing rubbers wear paint =rust, doors ,cant deny there are a few but thats also a lot to do with mis use /lack of general care ! All these ,as i think u suggest , are easily solved and general 993 NOT just TT
EVERYTHING THAT WEARS, wears faster on a Turbo ,its a tad heavier but stopping and accelerating harder if u drive it that way , ie Tyres ,pads , discs ............clutches do go a little quicker and one u ve left off , v hard to check is the power steering...........i mean it either works or it doesnt ! Usually seals on rack fail ,if left eventually pump goes [not as cheap as i thought] sometimes pressure pipes from pump to rack leaks , net result same ,steering gets heavier without fluid, pump or rack fail.......easier to spot weeping .............either way not much u cant do for £1000
Theres some good bargains to be had out there right now .......go for it !
Any parts Porsche supply for these cars do not seem to be cheap !!!

Yep, my loom was done FOC two years back and I recently had a new clutch fitted at JZ Machtech, for half the cost my OPC wanted. Also had problems with power steering making grinding noises but OPC sorted this out with a mod they apparently applied to the pipes that feed the fluid to the rack (thats what they told me...) Ive not found the car overly expensive to run, not much more than an older 911 and far less than an Audi Quattro Turbo Coupe I used to own. (And that was over 10 years ago). Factor in the zero depriciation and you have yourself a bargain supercar. I would buy the best pampered most original car you can afford and it will never be a chore when you do have to spend a bit to keep it that way.

Vic, thanks and yes my initials - the 555 has become a bit of a tradition, my father had his name and 555 on a plate many years ago!
