Crank grinders

Post by 912uk »

Ok as per my trip to France this week I need to get my orginal engine up and running so I can chase a few 911's so I have a contact for grinding but I am not sure. I want it to go a machine shop that can and has done Cranks before for early Porsche. So I quizzed him and he said he has done early porsche cranks and it would cost £200 for a grind /polish and crack test of it. Sounds sensible money and I am sort of happy but deep down I am worried he is just saying Yes to the work.

Any one know of any good crank grinders sort of my way Eg
Oxford to Southampton or as wide as Salisbury to London..

Mark

Mine's going to a man in Malton on recommendation from the guy James (hot66) put me in touch with for the cylinder head porting.

If they can do cranks properly that go on to take 500+BHP in a 4 cylinder VW application, then I guess they'll probably be good enough for me.

If you need it transporting, I'm down south quite a bit and would be willing to assist.

Cheers

Ian your a star ... have you his number .. would be good to get a new company we can all know to use for the future.

The main point in question is how they grind the cranks , the point being the radius on the journal edges is a must other wise it is a week point in the crank and will start a crack when in use.. so looking for some one who knows about early flat four cranks..I can supply bearings and data for the crank to be ground to. Also I am not interested in heat treatment afterwards but it would have to be polished and a crack test carried out so i know it's a good one......looking to get 125 BHP out of this engine and also reliable. I have driven a 912 out in San Jose hard and it was at the spec I am looking to build this one to and it's a lively car with lots of torque and it's a nice drive though the twisty bits knowing it's not going to do anything stupid at the arse end in corners..but also being not too stressed it's unreliable...I think Tony's car in San Jose was on 128Bhp not bad for our little 4 pots..

Hang fire just had a mate call me and happened to ask him about cranks and he has put me in the direction of an old company my way. They seam to know there stuff and they passed the Q&A test I gave them and knew afair bit about early flat 4's and said a few Porsche owners have come forward of late but taken the crank away because bearing where not available... interesting .. making calls now..

£120 + Vat

they started 49 years ago grinding cranks for spitfires!!!!! I think I might be in safe hands here......will keep you informed Also they do head work as well and have done a number of 356 and 912's over the years...
