On the sbj of Intermeccanicas etc w. homegrown chassis...!

Hi all.....

Question:

When you import a car and DVLA age confirm on the chassis (as I have personally seen with more than a few 911s from DE) they give you an age related plate as the first registration for the car, and you can register it and everyone is happy....

NOW... when you CANNOT provide documentary evidence backed up with a VIN, they (maybe used to only, don't know now) provide you with a b4stardised Q-plate, to let the world know the car was a home-grown shed.

With the likes of importing Intermeccanica speedster from CA or US, I spoke with them recently and they confirmed they do not call themselves car manufacturers in their own right, so as to avoid all the legalese that would go with such a status.

With this in mind, does anyone know what would happen in the UK when coming to register such a car? Has anyone done this and NOT been marked with teh 'I've got a kit!' mark...?

I may be wrong however, I think it would be classed as a new build when you submitted it for it's SVA. Am I right in saying the Intermeccanica doesn't use a Beetle Chassis hence no vin? As such, all you would do is make your own chassis plate up and put a number on it. Once it passed the SVA, that would become the chassis No on the new reg they would issue you. I'd reckon it would get a standard 06 type new issue plate and not an age related one.

What about donor parts? if the frame head was used for example you could say that, that was the 'Heart' of the car used and take its vin number??

Just a thought if they use the running gear etc it's just the floorpan that they don't use.

I don't know what you need from a donor vehicle to take it's identity. Or what costitutes a chassis for the SVA

All you need to retain a beetles reg (in days of old..not sure now with SVA) was the central spine.
