Nearside front wing web

Post by Bob_Salmon »

At long last I managed to find a s/h nearside front LWB wing :) Unfortunately, the guy I bought it from has put a couple of small patches in it (nicely done) but in order to do so he cut off the web which bolts to the inner wing mounting plate :(

Now I need to fabricate a new web to weld onto the wing. Could anyone help with a paper template please? Alternately, I will be happy to buy a web from an old wing or indeed, pay someone able to make one for me.

Any offer of help really welcome!

Hello, Bob.

I'll probably be able to help, but am not sure what the web referred to is.

Can you explain exavctly which bit you need please?

Kind regards

Thanks David. Towards the rear of the wing (inner side) there is a web welded at right angles to the wing face (well, there isn't on this wing!) It is where the four or five securing bolts attach the wing to the inner wing mounting plate which is welded onto the cars body shell.

If that isn't clear, I will try and take a couple of pictures to try and illustrate what I mean.

Many thanks.

Hello, Bob.

Ah!

Got it now..bit slow..sorry.

The web is actually not welded to the wing IIRC..its joined to the rear edge of the wing by a folded joint.

So this web is quite tricky to fabricate..it has a portion which forms a double skin with the wing intself, then a right angle return to the flange portion.

In fitting the wing, it also sometimes needs to be bent a bit to get the right fits..

THe answer is probably to make a rough web piece and tack it on to the wing while the wing is correctly positioned..you can expect some distrosion unfortunately and need to be able to deal with this..

Maybe a strong glue to finishe the job rather than a seam weld..

I wonder how Barry would recommend doing this one?

In the past I have just repaired the old flange at the bottom after doing the usual repair where water is trapped between inner and outer skins..I did not remaove the web completely..

Kind regards

Thanks David. Sounds as though I will need to weld the inner wing support panel onto the car body first and then offer any repair web to it, rather that the usual way around. Perhaps I can avoid too much distortion by using a spot welder with long arms.

Does life always have to be so difficult?

Bob
I have both my wings off at moment - the webs are very good. If it would help you i will take a good template of the bit you need and post it to you. i will have to be very careful though cos I have literally 'just' painted the wings ready to fit on.

Regards

Thanks for the offer Stu. Another member has PM'd me as they think they may have a suitable part, so please don't disturb your freshly painted wings at this time. If I need to, perhaps I can come back to you later?

On another tack completely, Has anyone had their old/rusty wings blasted and powder coated? I love taking rusty pieces to the coating factory and picking them up a week later, often looking better than new! In the case of the wings, it just seemed to me that it would save a lot of preparation time and that the powder coating would provide a good base for the eventual finish coat.

Trouble is, it just sounds too easy and whenever I find something easy, it usually turns out to have serious flaws :(

Cheers all

Hello, Bob.

Don't is my advice.

The ripples after blasting are unavoidable, take ages to sort out and will still be slightly visible..even using the most aggressive grits and lowest pressures, the damage is noticeable..

The best and IMHO nowadays only way to go is chemical treatments and then repair, final panel fit and adjust gaps, and finally E-coat.

Bob - this is still available as a new part (from Porsche or Mittelmotor) - is this what you're looking for (part no. 5) ?

Thanks Guys. The wing I have is in pretty good condition, it's just the stiffening web which has been cut off and which I will need to replace.

I 'think' the piece shown on the Mittelmotor site is the 'wing joining plate' which welds directly to the body and onto which the stiffening web of the wing bolts. I already have new ones of those thanks but I wanted to offer up the wing to the body before welding that plate on.

Cheers.

This might make it a little clearer:-

This is the nearside wing which has been partially repaired and which is now lacking the stiffening/attachment web.

This is the offside wing showing the stiffening/attachment web:-

Hi Bob: I had to make one of these earlier in the year, but it was just the bottom six inches or so.

Frankly it was a bit tricky, and given that it looks as though you will need the whole lot, I'd be tempted to buy a poor wing, linish through the crimped skin at the back to release the inner part.

Even if it is rusty at the bottom, I'm sure it would be easier to repair a donor section than make one from scratch. Needless to say, if you did want to go the making-one route, you should be able to template off of the one you've already got: just flip the template over to get the mirror image.

Does this mean that your are keeping the car?

BTW, I've got a pair of new wings here at the moment if you need to confirm any measurments, and there's Husbourne coming up in a few weeks which would almost certainly provide some donor wings.

It's at times like this I think I should get hold of a swaging tool: good ones are very expensive, but perfect for rolling in that reinforcing rib that runs through this part. I've already got the means for creating the curved flanges, albeit by hand.

Yes: I've just had a look at one of the wings: I'd definitely try to get a donor part to tidy-up: I'd forgotton how many little pressings there are.

I think if you were to make one up, you would never be able to pull that much shape into one peice, so it would have to be fabricated, probably in three pieces. You could beat the flanges over a curved plate, so tricky but do-able, and you could chase the little reinforement bead in by hand using a modified chisel or drill bit ground to the same profile as the rib, with a corrosponding groove cut/ground into some plate.

I reckon if I was to try to make this, it would easily take a whole day, by time you templated each piece, cut the blanks, made the tooling, done the metal forming, welded it all up and ground/linished it all to blend. Still, on the bright side, at least it's under stonechip :) .
