Anybody know where i can check a gearbox number to find out what type of box it is?
Number on the box is 911/01 7700755

It is a 5 speed box from 1971 911.
Out of interest here is a little more info on the ID side of things

Hello again.
The clutch is wrong: Beetle like most cars use a push type clutch s[ring..ie the throwout lever moves towards the flywheel to release..
The 911 has the opposite set-up.
These boxes tend to get bought for VW conversions, and sold on when they find they won't fit!
Some resourceful folk try to modify them to take the 901 throwout.
This does not work either, firstly because the pivot is in a different place, which is not immediately obvious, second because the gearbox casing cracks up and you get a wonderful rustproof oil-filled clutch..
I have bought them for anything from 150 quid in unknown condition..
Rebuilt with all the right stuff they will be worth over 1500, depending on who does the rebuild, and which close ratios are fitted.
But most early racers actually use the 901 box, and for later cars the 915 is miles stronger..
