The heater tube will be destroyed in the early part of the rust removal process, but would probably survive the Ecoat process. The next one I do will have the inner sill and tube removed for the rust disolving, then we will do all the welding and repair work, including fitting the inner and outer sills before Ecoating. I will fit a SWB style heater tube in this case which is all steel.

That was my concern, it seemed a bit of a waste to have to coat the car with the sill off when this is one of the major rust areas of the car. Are the SWB heat tubes still readily available?

Is the heat tube located behind the outer sill or behind the inner sill?

Hello guys.

To do a resto without removing the inner and outer sills is false economy IMHO.

The whoile job is no more than two days.to ra nd r the foutr sills..

Only then can you see the usually bad rust in the middle sheelt of steel which supports the torsion tube..and do the jack points correctly..

So I'm with Nick here..remove the kidney bowls and all 4 sills, rear quarters, and any other muoldy bits..strip , repair fully, and e coat..

The heatertube is easalsiy replaced by 2 inch 18g steel in most cases btw!

Kind regards
David

the factory are now offering restoration services - at Classic Le Mans Nick & I listened to one of the factory guys explain the rust removal and painting process which sounds similar to what you're doing Nick? From memory they were quoting about 3000 euro for the process but that obviously depended on what needed to be done to the car.

you can see the classifieds now though - "1970 911, restored at the facotry 2006"

cheers,

The amazing thing is that the factory "restos" are renowned as of mediocre quality!

Compared to some British specialists..

And often far from correct in many details to boot...

Not to say cheap..

Interesting. Anybody seen a factory restored car then? An old mate had his done at AFN in about '92. That looked really good although I did not have time to go through it with a fine tooth comb so to speak.

I have seen both an old AFN job..excellent..and a Factory job..OK..

Neither was as good as one can do today with best current technology..for less money..

Does anyone know if e-coating actually makes it inbetween the joints of panels? I stripped off one of my sills today and was quite pleased with the internal condition, they are pretty spottles inside however I did notice some surface rust on the surface of the joints would the chemical stripping and e-coating cure this?

I couldnt find the SWB heater tubes so made do with some 2" steal tube, which is A bit smaller then the original but I dont think it should make much difference.
