Gauge trim rings

Does anyone know how to get the trim rings around the gauges off? Mine are a little rusty and i wanted to clean them up. Do they even come off the actual gauge? Thanks

i think they are just interference fit - you should be able to ease them off and respray, i've got to do mine at some stage. i think pelicanparts.com has a how to on resotring gauges...

The edges of the trim are rolled over. I used a flat screwdriver blade, twisted most of the way round the trim to release it. I did need to go most of the way round to release it completely. Just press it back into place and press the rolled lip back into place with the same sccrewdriver to re-seal !
Oh, and be careful not to stab yourself with the screwdriver blade or drop the gauge glass ! I did both !

By "trim rings" do you mean the black-painted bezels ?

If so, the only way you can remove them without the correct equipment is to gradually go round the crimped over edge on the back with a small (preferably blunt) screwdriver, gently levering it outwards...carefully.

Im my opinion it is preferable to mask off the glass & spray the bezel without removing it.

Thanks guys, I'll see how hard it is to remove it, but honestly it sounds like a good idea to just paint it on the gauge. I really don't want to damage these. Thanks again

for what its worth I have done mine

i found the smaller guages the worst as the rings were just tighter

mine were a little chipped and with surface rust so to wet and dry sand they had to come off to do the job properly

if you do this its handy to buy an aerosol of air. like you would have for cleaning camera equipment, it means you can blow into the unit once separated to get all dust out

take your time doing it, its simple but fiddly, I was sweating madly when doing them, as you dont want the scredriver to slip and scratch anything, especially the new shinny paint

leave the paint to harden for at least a week

when I reassembled mine I placed all the parts together right way up then turned the whole thing over and whilst the outer ring was resting on a soft cloth on my desk I firmly pressed the unit together

I used a tiny electricians screwdriver

II have found its nearly impossible to make a real tidy job of reasenbly..

The ring remains crinkly at the dge wiythout a special tool.

So I paint them in situ..make a pl;atic mask accurately and you can prepare them and paint nivcley..
