Eye-burning fuel smell

Post by JonnyG »

Driving the baby today and the fuel smell is bad. I saw a thread on here a few days ago about this and where to look to trace likely causes and can't now find it.. all this is in the context of the webbers being functional but tired. I will get them rebuilt over the winter I think..

from memory I need to check whether it is running rich and causing fuel to enter the exchanger vents and thus the cabin, or similar

obvious leaks around the tank and fuel pipes

from those who have dealt with this are there any other places to check ?

Discovered that my sunroof comes right out which helped.. top banana

always grateful
Jonny

There's a difference in smell between raw fuel (say dripping from a line) and unburnt fuel coming out of the exhaust. If it really is 'eye-burning' I'd say you had the former problem. Go round the car with the engine running sniffing everywhere. When my tank's full I get a smell in the car only while it's moving, the lower air pressure draws the smell in from the tank breather through the holes in the bulkhead.
