Has anyone attempted a 964 backdate yet?

Has anyone attempted a 964 backdate yet?

Post by sprintstar67 »

I'm curious, I know Paul Stephens has done his 300R backdate version of a 964 (too expensive for me!), but has any one else tried it yet, privately?
I know theres quite a few torsion bar back date cars knocking about now and some very good ones at that, but I really like the idea of a 3.6 4wd '73 RS looky likey and I'm sure I'm not the only one!

I've not tried it but I'm very tempted. I have a 'tatty' 964C2 that would be a perfect donor, but as I already have a 2.7RS rep based on a 1966 2.0 Coupe there's no point really ..... ?

There was a very nice Paul Stephens retro 964 at Goodwood last weekend, super looks with classic lines.

If anyone does it I'd be more than interested in knowing what's involved and converting my one.

Surely the main problem is one of cost and it si quite complicated. A 964 will require all new panels, spoilers, bonnet etc - hence the PS prices.

I must admit the Paul Stephens car that was at Goodwood looked great, but not quite right, it was very very nice don't get me wrong, but a earlier car looks better, personally I think the conversion they do on the SC cars is nicer than the 964 cars, something to do with the sills lines, and 2.7RS reps have to have deep dished Fuchs wheels, something a 964 conversion does not have.

Viv, I don't think anyone on here has done a 964 conversion.

I'm sure a guy called Porsche Doc on Pelican has done it :) . He is trade and from memory found it quite difficult.

I think it would be cheaper to backdate a 964 than go the route I went and put a 3,6 in an early car. By the time you uprate everything the bills get very large  .#

So no body has done it we reckon then?
The sills look "different" because he has to retain the sill covers as its not a pretty sill behind it like the 80s cars. Just read a few articles on the PS cars and picked up a few of the tricks. Reckon I could do a good version of my own, something to think about anyway!..............
Biggest problem could be the wheels, I've read the PS made cars have specially made wheels because of offset and the brakes (PS ones have RS brakes I think). However, standard 964s "could" originally come with 16" Cups and I've seen plenty of early cars with late Cups, so why not vice versa? Will 16" Fuchs not fit a 964? Hope you can see my reasoning there?!
Don't get me wrong the 964 is a pretty car in its own right, but a 70s looking 4wd rocket has a certain appeal!

re. the wheels. Its all about caliper clearance. Best bet is to find a 'friendly' 964 owner & see if a 16" fuch will fit.

I think you will struggle & need to look at alternative wheels

I don't think anyone would disagree with your sentiments - I think as an engineering exercise it will be complicated and very expensive.

I would love to see how you get on

I honestly don't think it will be that difficult having backdated numerous bugs "back in the day" and also being a dab hand with the metal work equipment!
However unless I sell my speedster, I won't be starting for a while...........so that'll be in another ten years then! keep you posted!
Just getting peoples opinions on the feasibility, and I think its feasible!

Apart from the calipers, I can't think of any difference between backdating a G50 ('87 on) car or a 964. The sills would need 'smoothing' in both cases, the rest of the panel list is the same. It would make a very nice project and a great car at the end of it. 993? Anyone?? 8)
Look - I don't wanna 'backdate' it, ok?!!...
