I have just pulled the timing chain covers off my motor which i bought seized from rain water getting down into the webers. I noticed one of the saftey collars that was put on by the previous owner has a crack in it. Does this mean my tensioner has failed or was it put on to tight? Also how can i tell if the tensioner has failed? Thanks guys any help is greatly appreciated.
Nick
So, you are saying i should update to a tensioner from a 930? Would it be possible to just replace the saftey collars or would i be better off just biting the bullet and going to carrera tensioners?
thanks for your help
Nick
David is right those early tensioners were not the best. I think while the motor is out and you are already in there (as such) you should replace them. Practically you have 2 choices, 930 tensioners or the pressure fed tensioners. Another mod which is also done during this stage is to fit the '80 up style idler arms which incorporated a wider base bearing support area. If you do not use these you will need to fit a spacer between you old arms and the new (either) 930 or oil pressure fed set up. This is because the new tensioners are not as wide as the early ones you have.
I have just fitted pressure fed ones to my S motor that I am rebuilding and would suggest it is the best option.
