Sad news....

Really don't want to have to do this but I think I'm gonna have to sell my 914 project.....

Had a serious look at my finances today and the only way I'm going to achieve the results I want with the car is to spend a LOT of money and send myself into a lot of debt...... Getting hold of the money is proving to be very slow what with other debts to pay, so even if I did continue it'd take me forever........also I'm renting workshop space so just sitting on it for a couple of years is not viable.

It pisses me off that I don't have the money or proper facilities because I've got all the time and enthusiasm and doing a classic resto is something i've always wanted to do since I was a kid.

I guess the reality check was inevitable, time to cut my losses I think.

Everything hinges though on how much I'd get for what I've got.......not a lot is the first answer that comes to mind!

Its always a drain on the cash flow and I know how you feel, only you know the full situation.

Selling projects are often difficult so be patient and resist anymore expenditure on it, once you've made the decision stick by it and you'll be better off.

You may find that selling parts individually works out easier and more cash rewarding.

What exactly do you have?

Just as an example, although a different car a guy on VZi is try to sell a Karmann Ghia project, it appears to have had all the hard work done with many new parts and welding, just requiring detailed assembly, paint and trim. He's asking for 2k for it

Speaking as someone who has only very recently bought what I would term as a 'rolling project', and I'm sure my ambitions for it aren't as grand as yours (I just want to keep it going for long enough to enjoy it for a while); I feel qualified to say how much it stinks that you have had to make this decision.

It's always cheaper to have someone else throw their money into a big project restoration though - you might find you get your hands on the perfect car somewhere down the road (sorry about the motoring metaphor).

I will, of course, be joining the pack of scavengers / group of supportive well-wishers in the classifieds if you split it for sales.

Come to think of it 'project' is probably too strong a word for it....

What I basically have is a 914 stripped down to as many component bits as possible........ Very little work has been done, apart from the wiring loom which has been completely rebuilt.

If I do sell, it'll just be a very big box of 914 bits....

Descisions, decisions......

Sorry to be quite blunt, but your car won't sell easily

or achieve anything near top dollar

. I think you really need to get down to pure basic maths.

Car value £500 Tops

(only my guess

) devide by your monthly garage rental. Then work out how long you can keep it before you give it away or send it for scrap

.

I may come accross as hard nosed but I have been here before. as Nige said you need to make your choice and draw a line in the sand or lose even more money.

No problem being blunt.

I agree, selling the 'project' won't raise much cash at all.

If I do take the plunge then I'll break the car for parts and sell it that way. It'll take a lot longer to clear but the return should be higher, £10 average per part spread over 100+ parts = at least 1K. If I can clear £1500 I'll be happy.

At the end of the day I don't really want to sell at all, but I don't really have much choice.

If you can afford a good out door cover, I could offer you cheap outdoor secure storage for say a six month period at £120.00?

No vehicle insurance offered or implied.

Secure locked yard in Shropshire, outdoor storage on hard standing yard.

Other idea.

Sell it finished!

What I mean is , if you have skills and are keen, do the resto on commision basis, the new owner buys the baskets and boxes, and the parts, and pays you a low rate to finsh it..

You will make no real money, but cover overheads, and learns skills...

And when Its done, you might even have the money to buy it back..

Davidppp, That plan of yours could be the best way out. Sounds like a cool idea, a built to spec, finished 914 could realise a tidy amount. The only problem I can see is proving the final quality from an unproven source.

.....and the idea is heavily reliant on me having the skill to do all the work myself. Don't think i like the idea of slaving away for hours to restore a car at cost only to hand it over to someone else at the end!

I have two options:

Find somewhere that'll cost me next to nothing to store the car and parts until I can afford to restore it or.......

Break the car for parts and sell them all.

I can store all the small stuff already, its just the rolling bodyshell that needs a long term home.
