Just a thought ....I know that when we spoke at that show, I had had similar probs ....when I found that bare wire prob - see other thread - it then ran without any probs at all !! Wouldnt have thought it would have made any difference, but it did....might be worth checking all earths/wiring etc...like I say, just a thought

Hi Mark - thanks for that reminder. I have put the new facet fuel pump on and wound out the air mixture screws (2 turns out) and reset the floats on both carbs - they were slightly out but not too much.

I do have a spare white wire with a plastic connector block, on top of the engine near the coil/dizzy, need to check what that is for :?

It is still pretty much the same though but marginally better. I will check the wiring as you could be right and its best to check every possibility. My coil/dist wiring looks fine, I have no vacuum advance on the dizzy (not sure if that is right) and maybe the advance weights are sticking?

I still feel that it could be the carb on the pax side as it still smells too fuelly when ticking over and cyl 3 is the prob as it is intemittent on this - I think its running too rich and fouling up, this could be just on the tickover circuit on the carb barrel for cyl 3 but i dont know why as its set same as the others unless I have a rubber seal missing/bad.

I need to get it on a rolling road to check the carb setup and get it re-jetted if nec. and balanced - ideally though i want to fix the source of the misfire 1st. Can anyone recommend a rolling road in the brighton area?

I would like to stick the pertronix on at some stage as it sounds like a good move.

Are you going to fairmile tomorrow night? my first trip but should be a few there, looking forward to it...

make sure your not running lean at all, these engines don't like lean conditions as its the fuel that helps keep things cool, as well as air and oil.

I ended up with a melted piston mainly due to a lean mixture on one cylinder and timing way off (original engine builder marked it up wrong), amongst other things it required a (another) rebuild.

Don't do too many miles in it until you get it dyno'd. Mine need way bigger idle jets than I initially thought.

the rourteen has a new owner, see swapped, - so no aircooled :( ...but have fun !!

I am thinking about getting something less 'obvious' to park on the road in Cornwall ....not Porsche though

Hope you get your prob sorted dude ! 8)

Kev,

Just a note on your spare wire.....it's very likely that if its white and in the engine bay it'll be a hangover from the now redundant fuel injection harness, all the wires for that are white.

Cheers,
Tom Goodwin

Hi Kev,

does it missfire at low revs, but clears when you give it some welly (above 2500 rpm ish), if so could be a blocked idle jet. I run webers on my car, and don't get many probs, but amazingly, I can park the car in my garage, and I've got a blocked jet when I take it back out!

Well set up carbs shouldn't drastically reduce fuel consumption compared to EFI, only if the jetting is wrong, or you get a bad case of heavy right foot (then it munches petrol)!

I also had a similar symptom when one of my HT leads went dodgy.

don't know if that helps - good luck!

kind regards

Hi Robster,

Mine seems to vary depending on weather, colour of pants etc. It was worse on tick idle circuits but now is bad full stop. last week it was pretty good but last few days is more like a tractor, definitely running on 3 and about half power, drinking like a fish.

Im only doing short journeys as i dont want to do any damage but need to use it 3/4 days a week at the mo.

I've booked it in for a rolling road session but they are going to look at the setup 1st cos 3 is definitely too rich. Im thinking its the barrel on 3 - something is blocked or stuck and just pumping too much fuel through (all new leads).

the other plugs look fine but 3 is black and wet and fouled up. it could be the lead so i will try swapping around tonight but am also going to strip down the carb again when i get a chance!

thx for your feedback

erm - ok hands up so the main jets were loose which explains the drinking problem and that has stopped the siphoning when parked as well. looking at it running in the dark I can see tiny flashes around no 3 lead and around the cap, only minute but definitely there. although the cap is new it looks like it must be faulty - never trust new kit and always keep the old bits in case

providing I can get it running ok its off to the rolling road on monday. put a new facet fuel pump on and 2 weeks later it sounds like its trying to drill its way through the bulkhead - the next 'new' bit of kit heading straight back where it came

have you hard mounted the fuel pump? you would be best mounting it on rubber blocks, that will kill the noise it makes

Hi Nige,

yes i hard mounted it to the side of the battery tray and it occasionally sounds really loud - a bit annoying that it is intermittent - not that impressed really. I did sanwich a piece of rubber underneath but it nots enough me thinks.

I can try rubber mounting it somewhere else - tricky getting access anywhere to drill holes, under the batt tray would be good but getting in there to drill holes is another matter!

the rotary I use is hung underneath the petrol tank on the factory fit jubilee clip type mounting with a rubber wrap is almost unoticable when running.

You're is always going to sound louder as its at the back of yer head.

WOW - hallelujah - at last i nailed the problem and it was so simple!! I changed the coil and that sorted it. Seemed to be affecting just no. 3 but now its like a different car.

ALso had it rolling roaded today. Started off at about 70bhp and ended up with 102(flywheel) so not bad for a stock motor! should start seeing some better mpg as they were a bit out of balance too.

Ta Nige - think I'll move mine as its also a bit high really - stick it under the front out of the way me thinks.
