squealing clutch

Post by Andrew Ish »

I've been meaning to read the manual and look at the linkages but seems easier to ask first.

For a few months now I've had an intermittent problem with a squealing sound coming from the bellhousing area when the clutch is disengaged.

The clutch disengages and works fine but it feels/sounds like the release bearing/mechanism is draging on a rotating part when disengaged - sort of a dry metal on dry metal sound now unlike a fanbelt slipping.

If I dip the clutch the sound disappears and if I lightly press the clutch or lift the pedal up with my foot under the pedal the sound changes.

There is no rumble or roughness experienced through the pedal that you would expect to get if the bearing was on its way out.

I'm wondering whether there is adjustment on the clutch linkage to ensure bearing fully separates from diaphram when disengaged and I simply need to readjust or whether I've some foreign object stuck in there somewhere?

Any thoughts?

well yes, but wouldn't you think if it was thrust bearing on way out it would be rough and noisy when clutch depressed rather than when clutch not depressed?

You can tell I'm desperately trying to avoid the engine and box out scenario, can't you :)

Very often when the thrust is noisy if you just press the clutch down slightly the noise will dissapeer normaly the clutch thrust is the problem. Yes engine unit out clutch kit plus other parts as requird.regards Berny.
