Backdate Parts

Hello

Having read the the outstanding “1987 3.2 Carrera Backdate” post by “sladey” – I’m keen to find out more about the parts I’d need to carry out the conversion. I’ve got the summer off, so now would be an ideal time to start hunting/gathering them up.

Any help would be really appreciated.

hi

how far do you want to go, just the outside appearance or including the interior.....

try

bonnet
front wings
front slam panel
removing and amending bumper mounts front and rear
rear licence panel
rear bumper (RS or Touring look)

new chrome trim to replace your black trim around doors, rear windows and front/rear screens

ducktail ??
new rear engine lid anyway and apropriate replacement early style grille

15 or 16 inch wheels
tyres to suit
chrome dor handles not black

new seats for the jesture to early styling

probably lots of new ruber trims, not just the ones you do need but the ones you will replace because they get damaged when striping

that should get you started....oh and then there will be all the repairs you need as you strip of the old parts, and "whilst your in there you might as well" scenario.....

dont forget the respray...........

Hey there, you will require the following:

New front slam panel, long early bonnet, early pre 74 wings, front bumper, rear bumper, and perhaps a rear decklid.

It can be expensive, but I guess you could get most of the parts in Glassfibre from a company such as Rutherford engineering.

You should look at the mods Sladey had to make to his car for possible pit falls and take care when refitting the rear muffler. I found the stock rear 3.2 muffler wouldn’t fit under my early rear bumper. I had to go for a Flowmaster 80 series from the US which I then had custom fitted with stainless pipes.

It seems I'm rather late with my suggestion.

Alternatively you could go for the IROC look which would be post 74 and in my opinion looks very cool indeed.

For that you only have to change the bumpers and the rear decklid.

Alot cheaper... sometimes I wish I had done that.

Hi Simon,

These are the sort of prices I experienced:-

Bonnet - 300
wings - 600 the pair
bumpers - 550
Early slam panel - 350(?)
indicator units - 150
silver window surrounds - 300 + 120 (include 2 sets of rears) + 50 (kept buying better as I saw them
new heated windscreen - 140?
Variety of rubbers 200?
2 durant mirrors (when I only needed one!) 150
Fuchs (7&8's x 15) 460
Fuchs refurb - 705
Chrome headlight surrounds - 40

Some stuff I paid over the odds, some stuff I did well on. Durants I've seen for £40 on Ebay; indicators I've also seen cheaper (on this forum somewhere I think); Fuchs will vary with the market price; wings you can save money by NOT buying new ones, and instead having the front part of an early wing welded on - it depends on the condition of your current wings and also what you can get hold off; bonnets - I'm told that they frequently rust along the leading edge and it's a difficult repair. On the bodywork that alteration to the torsion bar covers required a bit of fabrication and work

The IROC idea is a good one and considerably cheaper - essentially would be new bumpers I think.

The car is definately lighter for removing those old bumpers, and you do feel the difference.

Thanks for the help so far. I'm keen to concentrate on getting the exterior right first and do a good job with that. Interior can be "Part 2"!

1) Are new metal front wings and bonnet available? If not, I guess it will be refurbished secondhand or fibreglass.

2) Any idea on sources for the chrome trim items?

I think you can get new wings from Karmann Konnection, but they are about £800 each!!!!!

Best to try for second hand - got mine at the husborne autojumble - autofarm were selling them on behalf of a customer

Chrome trims - got those off DDK members - put a posting on the site.

I've actually got two rear windows, but they don't include the closers/handles

New wings are available from your local Porsche dealer (£750 plus VAT), but they are on back order at the moment. New bonnets are also available genuine (£1000) and repro at €600ish. The genuine slam panel was also on back order recently but may be availabe again now.

I think wings are something like EUro 600 each plus freight duty and VAT. If you are not VAT registered, Mittelmotor will charge you German VAT which is 16%.

I personally like the IROC look, and the blue car Nick Moss built last year was beautiful !!!

I would go down that route.

mittelmotor is your best bet, I have had 2 large orders so far, the last one finaly included my replacement bonet

their new front wings are very good, genuine porsche parts, the bonet I got is a pattern but reliably good I am told, I have yet to try it on the car.........

, the reply I got from Mittelmotor for prices back in february was;

The right hand side cost 783 Euro including 16% VAT (or do you have a VAT-ID number ?, then you can take the 16 % off)

The left hand side is a little bit more expensive & has a price of 829 Euro incl. VAT. (all following prices are included the 16%)

Regarding the bonnet, I can offer you both. The price we have in our list with 699,- Euro is a reproduction, but it is really perfect. I don’t think that you will have a better fitting with an original part, as Porsche has written at their part description additional “it is necessary to rework”. The original part cost 1500 Euro.

I have also bought new chrome and aluminium trim from them, but also bought most rubbers and shiny trim from Forest Fine

Mittelmotor have a great web site, I downloaded the full catalogue and prices list, its very well organised, I bought most of the new body parts (including slam panel) from them, Forest fine have a web site but its not complete yet, best to ring Rob and get one posted

I am going for a RS Touring look for my 2.7 Carrera, so I have had to pay for more chrome trim things, the lightweight look would be cheaper and as the guys have pointed out the IROC is even cheaper as the wings and bonnet and slam panel are retained

I have just been checking www.partssource.autopage.co.uk & they seem to have some early wings, bonnet etc ..

I have never dealt with them though so can't comment either way on what they are like as a company

That's Russell, quite a character, I found him honest do deal with, sometimes sells on ebay as well. I've had a few bits from him in the past, the website isnt up to date much, but he's usually worth a call as he does get some early stuff in.
