Rear Wheel Bearing on a SWB

The cost of my rear suspension rebuild is steadily mounting with the discovery that one of my rear wheel bearings needs replacing and at £265 plus VAT, I’ve asked for the other rear bearing not to be looked at until I get over the shock

Is this price the norm?
I’m now looking around to see if a bearing specialist can give me a better quote.
Any ideas

Hello, Charlotte.

That is fair if it includes the labour..it takes a while.

The inner and outer bearings and seals can be readily obtained from german sources among others for about ,IIRC, 80-100 quid.

It doesn't include labour, just parts. Can you give me any german contact names?

Look on Pelican - it will always give you an idea of what you should be paying -
65-68 cars
rear inner bearing - $106.25
Outer bearing $10.75
Inner Seal $31.25
Outer Seal $8.50
O Ring $4.00

= $160.75 + probably $40 shipping + Vat /duty

I would guess around £140 maximum. That said, I know nothing about the rears of SWB cars so there may be more parts needed than this.

I'm a great believer in not changing just one side of my car, if it was me I'd be changing both together whatever so maybe your guy's quoting for 2?

46 euro for the outer, 135 euro for the inner, 46 for the sleave, 8 for the front seal and 15 for the back. 29 for UPS Del so 279 euro = about £199

There is also no import or VAT added to that as there in the EU and there prices already include sales tax.

There are four qualities of bearings-colloquially American and then good, better and best. The SWB have an inner and outer bearing which was later combined to become onedouble for the LWB cars-they should cost about £140 the pair each wheel for good quality stuff. PA Transend

£265+VAT is a joke. There's nothing particularly special about these early swb hub bearings.

If you can remove them yourself take the numbers off the side of each bearing (or better still take the actual bearings and seals) and visit your friendly local bearing supplier (Wyco is a company I often use).

Ask for equivalent bearings (SKF is high quality brand) and seals.

When I did mine, I doubt whether any single bearing cost more than about £20!

Exactly what I did for my gearbox, less than a third of the price of Porsche OEM for the same parts (SKF or Timken)

There is a Porsche patent on the rear inner bearings for a SWB. You can't buy any other as oem (I believe it's a FAG bearing, but with a 901. number on it.) Searched the whole www for another than the expansive porsche part, but they aren't available anywhere. I paid about 120 euro's for mine at www. erpa.nl

Thanks for all your replies - I’ll check out the links. I was also told that the rear inner wheel bearings were patented and could only be purchased as an original Porsche part; which I’m sure has had an affect on the price tag!

I’m hoping that this worn bearing is the cause of the loud knocking noise from the rear when driving around a right hand bend and sometimes in a straight line up a hill if pushed (it doesn’t make any noise around a left hand bend). If not I suppose it’s on to the CV joints.

Try the CV joint first assuming they are Lobro you can fit larger ball bearings but good used joints are cheap.PA

I've just been quoted £100.73 each (plus VAT I guess) from AFN in Guildford (OPC Guildford) 01483 408800

4 weeks to go and still need to rebuild carburettors, replace rear wheel bearings and CV gaiters, re-bush rear suspension, change rear shocks, replace gearbox oil seal and finally get it MOT’ed and serviced. I’m sure it’s doable

It’ll be like a different car when I get it back
