I think I've now officially become a 'Grumpy Old Man' ...

Post by Lightweight_911 »

.

- although some people would probably say that happened years ago !

Yesterday I stumbled on & watched a You Tube video comparing 2 x 356 models currently on sale at Phil Raby's - one a standard freshly restored car & the other a modified well-used example.

The comparison was carried out by a couple of (supposed) Porsche aficionados who are apparently well known - Lee Sibley & Andy Brookes.

I'd never heard of either of them & had to use google to find out who they are ...

In short, the video was one of the worst I've watched ... neither of the commentators knew anything about 356's - & one of them even had to use google on his phone to find out where the handbrake was !

For someone who has apparently been the editor of one of the monthly Porsche magazines (Total 911 ?) for many years it was laughable.

How can someone set out to film a comparison video without undertaking some preliminary research on the subject ?

Rant over ...

To be fair Andy, I agree with you on that one . Usually a lot of the youtube channels are aimed at a 'general' audience so you can give them a bit of slack, but in this case its meant to be a specialist porsche channel so should really be well researched in advance.

My grump old man bit is more aimed at he numptry's I have to share the roads with ... what is it these days with the 50mph brigade ? ( although I remember reading a long thread on facebook and being amazed at how many people thought the NSL on country roads was 50 mph ! )

Speaking of YouTubers and journalists.. one of my favorite 'relaxing' channels is David Freiburgers road trips in old cars etc ( ex Hot-rod editor in chief & motor trend presenter ) .. all about the places & history enroute .. not much happens really  . he does know his american hotrods inside out though

I've been a Senior Member of the Club for a very long time.
Mainly came all over me due to the degrading of attitudes in this country; I now almost feel embarrassed to be respectful and polite and use manners my mother drummed into me.

Lots of experts around on YTube seeking their fortunes, maybe a few deserve it too.

My wife thinks I have changed since looking at YTube too much, all negative generally, but many people I know have the same outlook!

Nowadays it's all about content and followers.

And all these idiots that call themselves creators and influencers........

I'm 58 now so it looks like I'm turning into one too - a grumpy old man not an influencer :)

Totally agree Andy. If it’s any consolation, Sibley is equally clueless about other Porsches!

We all start clueless.

I quite like the genre of clueless presenters demystifying stuff, like Mat Armstrong fixing supercars using only google and unending chirpy enthusiasm.

I bet there were people out there who were pleased to learn where a 356 handbrake is.

Mat Armstrong is a perfect example of how YouTube can produce the goods.
At first I found him and his approach irritating, but he sure has come on from the early days, self made a huge wealth of money, followers and expertise on may cars which are dream machines for 99% of his followers I guess.

Forgot the entertainment side of his threads!
