Ingolstadt is lovely right in the middle. I actually prefer it to Munich. There is a fancy automotive hotel there which I fancy staying in at some point. Like Stuttgart's V8 Hotel - which is worth staying at just for the Flammkuchen and on-site brewery.

Try and get to Cefalu. Not only very pretty, full of history but lots of great places to eat.
