Re: 356A Coupe restro
Given the speedster decided to drop its fuel on the floor, I thought a quick wash and go to Classic Le Mans in the 356. Started 1st time so all good.
Maybe I should do a basic service, oil change filters etc. Popping a bit at idle so maybe plugs.
Pulled the deep sump to check and another disaster;

Will the scope truly stuffed up in the case looks like it came from the crankshaft.

Now looking at plan c or is it d not sure, more soon.

That looks like a pain in the arse Greg.
After all your effort with the car and then it treats you like that!
Whats gone wrong with it exactly?
Good luck with getting to CLM.

Thanks guys, appreciate your comments.
Not sure of exact problem. Once back from CLM will take over to Paul at PRS356 for investigation.

Re: 356A Coupe restro
The 356 engine is ready for pick-up from Paul at 356PRS. Seems the issue was insufficient back lash on the camshaft. The lack of play caused mayhem. Paul and his team seem to have done a great job as always.
The whole process involved a complete strip whilst carefully making notes of any variation to spec, I have been given a full breakdown. Once the offending parts were discovered the rebuild involved a mixture of new or good used items.
Replacement parts quite extensive;
SX2 camshaft
Cam gear -2,
Sump plate studs
Crank timing gear
Acorn nuts - good used
Case washers - good used
Case O ring
Valve lifters, performance
Pushrod seal
Front main oil seal
Engine case gasket
Banjo bolt
Rear main oil seal
Generator pulley shim
Flywheel to crank lead gasket
Parts Gland nut
Apologies some of the pics are out of sequence.

Re: 356A Coupe restro
Good news? No case damage. I didn't even know the cam needed back lash. Hopefully, many happy miles and smiles to come

Re: 356A Coupe restro
As mentioned above, already for collection. It was run for 30mins at 3000rpm to burn the cam into place and then checked.

I bought a small motorbike jack lift to help getting the engine back in solo.

That make is that exhaust? Looks like equal length pipes but with Sebring sounds? Performance and beauty?
Do you have a smaller 'racing' pulley on too?

Re: 356A Coupe restro
Bootsy - thanks for the heads up on the article. Grabbed a copy this morning in Norwich and enjoyed reading over a full English. I cant wait for spring time to get behind the wheel and start enjoying driving again.
