From the Telegraph obituary of 1961 Safari Rally winner Major William Coleridge (right)
"The halfway stage was reached after two days and they were allowed seven hours’ rest. Coleridge had counted on a number of late nights in night clubs building up stamina and hardening him to fatigue but it was only with the greatest difficulty that his companions managed to get him out of bed and back into the car"
maverick noun
1. an unorthodox or independent-minded person.
2. an unbranded calf or yearling.
Origin mid 19th century: from the name of Samuel A. Maverick (1803–70), a Texas rancher who did not brand his cattle.
Looks just like my late father’s R16TX - the car in which I first exceeded 100mph (on the A31 Hog’s Back heading home from Guildford). A fab car, and the third Renault 16 he had owned. Previous models had both been TL spec, the first in dark blue, the second in maroon.
I always try and spot a few interesting cars when away on my travels and this is it so far! At my daughter’s place in Edinburgh and this is in the car park l. She’s got a cool view from her window too
That looks interesting! Where was it, and what was the story?
