Really? So they raise £107M (max) at the detriment of an industry that generates £9BN. So just a 1% decline in the classic car industry and the quick win is negated. Can they do sums?

I am lucky enough to own five classics. If this happens 4 of them would immediately go SORN. I would sell one, have to reconsider the planned engine rebuild of another, and the others would probably just sit for six months, making them ornaments rather than vehicles. I would probably just tax one or two a season and the others would have outsourced maintenance sidelined.

So we are talking about keeping 2 cars taxed for six months each and 3 cars off the road. There is no way the gov will raise £100M as half the cars will just go SORN and the others will probably be taxed for six months. I reckon they are looking at £30M tops.

I no longer would keep abreast of the maintenance of 5 vehicles so the amount of work for the classic car industry ( both labour and spares) has to be impacted by at least 40%. OK, this is just me and maybe others would do different. If you scale up my scenario, they are tossing away £3BN to make £30M. Seems utterly stupid.

This is money is part of the daily mail I think so it’s probably not true.

But I agree with you entirely, it would be a pointless tinker with tiny numbers when the current circumstances are so dire, but I wouldn’t suggest going to your nearest food bank to canvas opinion with the ‘I’ll have to sell one of my five Classic cars’ bit.

I am not a 'Daily Mail reader' and it is a shame that this seems to only be reported by those sorts of rags, but sadly that's because of the demographic. It is in the car press as well, albeit seen as a small possibility.

It's a bit like our 'special deal' with the US on tariffs. There was a triumphant announcement that the UK had secured a deal of 10% for new cars but it left parts at 25%. Now, the EU has done a deal with Trump at 15% for cars AND parts, so the UK is in a worse position for parts. It's hardly reported as this government do not appear to care about manufacturing.

Anyhow, you missed my point. It affects the people who work in the classic car industry FAR more than the owners. Me selling/SORNing a car means one less car is consuming parts and engaging in the classic car industry. That directly affects the workers.

I have 2 classics, the 73T and the Yamaha YB1 motorcycle, the latter may not be a classic @ 1998 age.
I've lost track of when a vehicle is officially Classic.

As said, if there is a tax then if reasonable, I'll tax for a 12 month period on the 911, but if high, then April to end Sept will do it for the car's use.
The Yamaha is on sorn anyway. It is a nice ornament in the garage to my mind.

The impact on the Classic Industry will follow as Jonny clearly states imho, He is dead right.

UK Government could not care less, just need the money to chase everyone in the country for money, just turn every stone over and rob the rewards.

I think there is enough weight now DVLA have been 'broken' to push against this IF it is correct.

Here in Ireland cars over 30 years old ( classics) incur road tax of €50 and do not require MOT.
Standard road tax on a new car can be well over €1000 so a good deal really.

My Skoda Superb tax is £620, my wife's Skoda Citigo is £25.

How much does the UK government get from road tax?

The UK government generates approximately £7.2 billion annually from road tax, according to the Office for Budget Responsibility for the 2022-23 period - and that was before they started taxing EV’s as from April this year, and also included them in the £40k and above threshold at the higher tax rate as well.!

Your numbers are good but governments make strange decisions all the time. Their number 1 priority is to be reelected. Unfortunately, there will not be many tears shead for those able to have multiple hobby cars.
