Sad to report that Gary Emory, father of Rod Emory and a hugely talented customiser, hot rodder, outlaw creator - and father of the Baja Bug VW - passed away Sunday night. RIP Gary...

I don't think it can be over-estimated what a massive effect Gary (& his son Rod) had on the modified Porsche scene.

The grandfather of the 'Outlaw' - especially in relation to 356's - & a huge influence on generations of modifiers.

Gary was always a friend from the day we first me in the Early 80`s, when I just dropped in on him at his Parts Shop in the late 70`s (it was `Porsche Parts Obsolete` back then and located in LA)
He did not know me from Adam, but un-attended, he invited me to "go climb the Racks," "you might find something that you like"

40 years later Paul bought an original part from the No.1 Baja when we bumped into Gary at a very small Swap meet

He was just a GREAT Guy

Sad to hear this... May he rest in Peace.

Almost 15 years ago I had some nice conversations by email with Gary when I was building my Black Betty. He appreciated the way I tried to do something different (not just building a replica). I sent him pictures of the progress of my build and in 2013 -when the car was finished- he sent me 2 Emory Outlaw 356 t-shirts, an Outlaw Gear knob and the then already famous Outlaw Grill Badge. Later I got an email from Rod in which he asked me to send the grill badge back, because those were only intended for Emory built Outlaws and his father was not supposed to send those badges as a gift. Then, a few weeks later, I got an email from Gary in which he stated that he had a 'good conversation' with his son and that I could keep the badge...

That badge sits ever since proudly on my grill (as does the gear knob on my gearstick)...
