I've seen a couple now, and I reckon if they'd been released first they'd have been loved like the New Beetles were in the mid-nineties. However. The new 5 is a phenomenal looking thing - it's really captured the spirit of the original 5s (the seats and dashboard are especially excellent) so the new 4 was (and is, I guess) at an immediate disadvantage. It's colour-sensitive, though. It looks atrocious in white.

I like the 5 - I was dismissive initially as I don’t like the X lights of the Alpine. Not sure what they were thinking of there



But this, definitely yes. Am trying to talk the wife out of an electric mini but am losing the battle



Her argument is valid I suppose - she didn’t like the original so not much I can do about that

As I posted the ongoing story of my Dad’s 1936 Frazer Nash/BMW 319 in this strand before, and its trip to Boulogne for the Frazer Nash club raid (and subsequent breakdown) I thought you might be interested in what’s been happening since.

It’s been having yet another expensive fettle - a dead dynamo needed resuscitating. But then an event came up that sounded interesting, and I thought I’d enter the car to see if it got selected to be shown at Goodwood’s GRRC Members Open Day, where members and their guests all get to vote on their most ‘favourite car’. And it was indeed selected for the competition.



As I kind of wanted it at the very least to get there - I trailered it up the day before. Lucky it was a Saturday, and I found the lorry park at the Membury services pretty deserted - a good chance to practise my slowly developing trailer reversing skills.



The journey was long and hot but GRRC admin were very helpful and I was able to drive the little roadster in position for its lonely night wait beside Goodwood House until the Sunday morning.



I had very little idea about this event and didn’t really know what to expect, but the Sunday dawned with fabulous weather, and all the cars entered were very well arranged and presented, parked up with explanatory boards telling their stories around the grand circle in front of the house, and literally thousands of people began to arrive. Including (as we were able to invite non-member guests) a number of my family who I rarely see but who live closer to Goodwood than I do.

For the first time my sister and her brood were able to see their father’s/grandfather’s/ great grandfather’s car in the flesh. Lovely moment.

The Goodwood event is called Open Day because members can go in and see the staterooms in the main house - and many ‘visitors’ also paid for the privilege of doing so.

As it’s a family day Goodwood also lay on the wonderful fairground attractions too, the big wheel, rides and face painting for the kids.




Lots of regular goers seemed to take picnics and sit beneath the shade of the trees , but there’s food outlets and a bar, and live music - and all the lovely competing member’s cars, motorbikes and even a micro car and cycle to look around. In addition to these, there was a display of every iteration of DB Aston Martins, and an Alfa Romeo display too.



I hardly had a chance to see any of the other cars but there were many I’d have loved to have driven home in.







Most of the time I spent talking to members and their guests about the Frazer Nash/BMW. Very few knew exactly what it was, but to most people the story of how I tracked down my father’s old car in Germany seemed to be pretty compelling.





All that talk was abruptly cut off though because if you were one of the selected car owners up for the ‘favourite car’ award, you were invited, (+1) to a 3 course lunch (with wine) in the ballroom, an invitation Trish and I had accepted without hesitation!





We emerged shortly before the results of the voting were due.

And… the little roadster won!









A magic day. My cred with the grandkids went up a few points..

Thanks Karl - it was a really wonderful day for the family, who hardly ever meet. My grandson calls me Danya - he was heard, leaning on the car, telling a woman that ‘this car belongs to my Danya’. He had no idea he was talking to my sister! The car really has brought the family together!

No - he just lent us the location and gave us a lovely lunch in his ballroom! The GRRC organisers Rosie and Josh gave us the award - which also includes a chance for the little roadster to be displayed next year in the foyer of the RAC Club in Pall Mall. All a bit of a fairytale story.
