Re: Flares....
After a round trip to see Nick and Gary yesterday I sat down to size a couple of pics to post when I learnt of the sad passing of Ian Walton (ian2.2s).....despite knowing of Ian's situation this hit me harder than I realised it would and I naturally lost the appetite to start posting photos of my car!
After an evening of reflection I wondered just what my Porsche journey over the past 12-15 years would have been like and how dull it may have been without sharing on DDK?? If anything, I need to post and share far more!.......this community has not only provided help and encouragement along the way, it has introduced me to many lifetime great friends from the North, South and everywhere in between where we've shared amazing trips, drives and experiences good and bad and countless laughs that will ring on forever!
I love my cars and their restorations but I value the friends I've made here far, far more!
So here's to Ian (and all), thanks for reading my rubbish over the years, thanks for the help, encouragement, the laughs and great times but most of all thanks for being a friend

Re: Flares....
So a round trip yesterday to borrow donor engine number two from nick Fulljames to be fitted....

...at least it's the correct gearbox...

...and a reminder of the RS gear ratios...

...along with the exhaust fitted the car should now be the correct weight for it's trip to Centre Gravity in 10-days time...

...minor detail...I searched high and low for correct looking hood pins and purchased a couple of sets without success so in the end Gary had a couple made which look much more like it....

...hopefully he can get these fitted along with a few other final items before I collect in a weeks time...

Cheers,

Re: Flares....
Exciting moment for me with the script being applied to the car next week however this raises another small dilemma for me....
...the issue as ever being that all 3.0RS's are different and with so few cars being produced, with many immediately donning race car graphics, plus the fact that there isn't a single 3.0RS that I know of with original paint means it leaves you guessing as to exactly how the factory race department positioned the script?
The 1973 manual does give measurements and it's what most restorers seem to have followed....

....for the UK near side (left) the 'C' is aligned to the front edge of the door. The fixing of graphics to left side is pretty much undisputed as correct and I've never seen any variation other than height.
However for the other side it's not quite so clear although over the years most have again followed the manual with the tail of the 'a' being aligned to the front edge of the door for the UK off side (right)...as examples chassis numbers #9098, #9099 and #9108.....

...the Mexborough car #9092 I'm (very loosely) basing my build on, when going through it's recent restoration has the graphics applied differently with the tail of the 'a' moving across the door and onto the front wing...

...however that wasn't always the case with #9092....

I've seen a few cars where the tail of the 'a' is also positioned onto the front wing and suspect this may be due to an early factory press photo....

...this is the only single reference source I've seen with the graphics applied this way and could be misleading. To me it just doesn't seem that clean and it does digress from earlier factory instructions.....despite hours of searching I've not come across any early original RS photos that offer definitive proof. If anyone can help in that respect please do share?
Unless I'm shown otherwise soon my personal preference is to go with the factory manual guidance as I think it looks better. I wouldn't be surprised if there were several variations of how the script was applied at the factory depending on who did it on the day!
Ultimately who knows what's 'correct' and frankly who cares! Just one more small detail to fret over but I think they all look good no matter!

Re: Flares....
Hi Darren
The build is of course fabulous. The results, even nearly finished, of the whole thing look tremendous. A credit to you for all your attention to the details and far be it from me to offer any kind of advice but I’m going to just this once.
I think the neater option on the decals is to have them balanced right and left. 10cm space from the door edge to the ‘C’ and the same on the other side for the ‘a’. I think it looks a little clumsy otherwise when the ‘a’ overlaps the door edge. It means the stripe looks better on the wing to my eyes too.
It’s going to look and sound great whatever you decide.
Regards
Mike
Ps that 356 looks dreamy too

This period press shot is conisistent with the manual

maverick
noun
1. an unorthodox or independent-minded person.
2. an unbranded calf or yearling.
Origin mid 19th century: from the name of Samuel A. Maverick (1803–70), a Texas rancher who did not brand his cattle.

Re: Flares....
Just my 2 pence..
Align as per manual and on the the side set the tail of the’a’ the same distance back from the door gap.
I feel the height is far more important for the correct look.
If in the distant future it can be all removed and reset.
Hope this lovely car will deliver the goods and get some stone chips soon!

Re: Flares....
I'm going to be contrary here, but I think the tail of the 'a' being on the front wing looks better. Kerning is highly personal, I know, but it feels more 'balanced' like that, rather than there just being a semi-random stripe on the front wing. If the Carrera script was only on the door, and if the flares weren't so wide, I'd probably feel differently.
