I’ve just returned from the Frazer Nash Club ‘Raid’ to Boulogne driving my father’s old Frazer Nash/BMW 319 roadster - for the first big trip since its engine rebuild.



I’ve driven on Porsche rallies, convoys and Flat Four Runs before of course - whether in my old 356 or 911, but in amongst pre war Nashes is something else! They don’t hold back.




The guy fettling his Supersports is Simon Blakeney Edwards, Chair of the VSCC, winner of this year’s Silverstone Pomeroy Trophy, and President of the Nash Club - he oversaw the rebuilding of my engine.



The first day’s drive from Dieppe to the Hotel in Boulogne was sublime - fab weather, a small convoy all in synch with warning hand signals travelling back down the line so there were no surprise speed bumps that French villages love.



There were over 70 Nashes - we were the only non chain driven, but we were made really welcome - a number of the Nash owners have 315s or 319s back home.



On the second day the weather was apocalyptic, and I learnt a lot about my road holding capabilities - tail happy. The Rain Ex was useless, and driving through a turbine landscape, the side wind (with no side screens) was like no other - but we got there to St Valery. And back.



The Nash club (Captain - our very own Winston Teague) has a very active up and coming youth element as family cars are handed down and enjoyed - expertly. On Sunday we all congregated in the Place de Résistance to commemorate a Nash winning the 1925 Boulogne Grand Prix.



After a romp around the old circuit, we were returning to the hotel and disaster struck. Engine died. We pulled over. Within seconds, passing Nashes had pulled up to help - we were in excellent, supportive, knowledgable hands. They aren’t going to let you be left behind.



It was like being operated on. I said as much to one of the guys, and he replied under his breath - ‘I think you’ll find one of them actually IS a surgeon’. The fuel pump was diagnosed US. A replacement one was magicked from a boot of spares, lashed up to get us back to the hotel, with the help of a Frenchman living nearby (arms folded in pic) who supplied electric wire and connectors (from the middle of Lidl) - and we returned to the hotel, where a better replacement fuel pump was found and donated!



It all got us back safely to England. A knockout experience. Film coming shortly when I get a chance after we’ve finished our garden opening.

It was a great trip indeed, I'm sorry not to have spent more time with you Jeremy, I had completely lost track of who was staying on for the second leg to Champagne, and who was heading home. Our Youth 'section' is strongly encouraged and well supported by the club, their boisterous behaviour is a joy to share. By passing down, lending, sharing, we enable youngsters to join in, and by the club offering under 30s spares at cost, enabling them to join in these big events by them getting Airbnbs or camping instead of the main hotels and lobbying hard behind the scenes for accessible insurance etc. they feel welcomed, and embraced. The VSCC play a big part in this too.....Ill put some pics up too once ever caught up with fixing and admin! Some other DDKers there too.....Well done on your first, I really hope you'll be back.....we have space on the 1000 mile reliability challenge at the end of the month and the annual club picnic follows that in Yorkshire, a good journey for a very jolly weekend too.... W

My friend has a frogeye with a ~130bhp motor. More power is not a thing I would want for it.
