1967 Porsche 912 Project

Post by Tedri Mark »

I bought this Californian import back in 2001 from RCC Imports in Wales, UK, complete with no engine, and it sat pretty much as it was until 2015, where it was moved to a workshop to have the metalwork done.

After some initial progress, both work and communications stopped, and to cut a long story short, I got the car back last weekend:

WHAT NEEDS DOING:

It has had new floors fitted in place with screws for now - need to do a bit of tapping to close up the gaps between the flanges:

Some gaps up the front:

Looks like some previous accident damage up here, too:

The driver's side hinge panel is completely rusted through at the bottom - I have a later panel which I think I'm going to use to repair this, as the bottoms are the same:

Passenger side isn't as bad, but has rusted through at the bottom:

Looks like both sills/rockers will need replacing, too...

I'm pretty confident that I can do the repairs to a better standard than this previous repair on the fender closing panel:

The fender mounting flange on both of the inner fenders needs repairing, along with some bits along the front air intake:

The part I'm most daunted about repairing is the rear passenger side inner fender:

The driver's side looks like it's had some repairs too:

You might want to get that on a jig before you go to far. That rear looks like it's had a big hit. Good luck with the project.

I feel an awesome thread coming on!

The wounds look quite deep in the back end so get it straight first before doing anything is a good plan.

Best of luck!

You're at the start of a long road.
As mentioned getting it straight is the most important thing and then crank up the welder!

Good luck and looking forward to following your progress. 👍🏼

Had a quick nose around the inner fender rails earlier - I've been using a photogrammetry app on my phone called KIRI Engine combined with Blender for a couple of things recently, and thought I'd get this section as a 3D model so I can plan how I'm going to repair it:

The fender rail is only curved in one direction - from the top you can see that it is a straight line:

So I'm thinking I either make it by welding together 3 sections:
Image

Or using a shrinker/stretcher to make the main angle of 1&2, and then either weld the small lip (3) onto that, or make some sort of wooden form and try to try to hammer it over.

Also had a little look at the front fender over on that side:

Crusty where the horn grilles go:
Image

Similar story where the indicator assembly sits:
Image

Lower edge of front right wing has had some bad repairs previously:
Image
Image
This seems double skinned along the rear edge where it meets the door, or is that just the mounting plate where it folds under the skin?

Image

Along with the above, the rails to attach to the fender are pretty much disintegrated.

I'm going to attempt to repair them myself properly, although I might keep an eye out for a section to repair the rear bottom edge rather than try to make one myself.

You can get the top inner wing section from RD.The lower section is taken up with the inner repair panel. You will need to fab the middle section, same as i did on my build. You can hammer the curve or wheel it.A bit tough to try to stretch with a stretcher,as its a tough profile[][/img]
