Weber IDF has continuous flow of petrol

The right side of my 44 IDF is continuously flowing fuel. I took off the top section to check the flows were stuff then put it back together and still had the issue. Once a turn the fuel pump on petrol is continuously dripping into the top of the butterfly? Any ideas?

Have you checked for a sticking needle valve ?

Also check the float for pin holes ...

If it's dripping down onto the butterfly from above, then either the fuel pressure is too high (I presume you have a pressure regulator that works, set for no more than 3-3.5psi) OR the float chamber is over-filling, caused by a faulty/sticking needle valve or, as Andy suggests, a holed float. The latter is not at all uncommon on carbs that have the original soldered brass floats. A loose main jet is unlikely to cause this as fuel is sucked through the main jet by vacuum created in the venturi.

Thank you. This is quite strange as the needles were replaced only 2-3k ago with better tips. Anyway I might have some in a rebuild kit.

No I don't have a pressure regulator but maybe I need to add one. Maybe this one?

Double strange that I continue to have to play with these 44 IDF but the 40s in my 356 soldier on.

Some advice from another expert (Alan from AHS)

Could be float stuck down, could be the pressure against needle valve size. Could be fuel ??

A pressure regulator will definitely be a step in the right direction.

Just a heads up.

A, keep pressure regulator horizontal

B ,keep it as low to the pump as possible

C fit in as cool a place as can be, heat plays havoc with modern fuels.

D, from the pressure regulator try to keep the pipework rising to the carbs

E put the tee to each carb as equal in length as possible

F, set at 3psi at the carb

Just a note pump fuel today suffers with heat, once it gets warm it becomes difficult to predict or control.

Looking at this again. I added a pressure regulator and set to 3psi. I cleaned the float needles and still got a constant flow. I found an service float needle and fitted but still a constant flow. I adjusted the float level so I thought it would stop flowing sooner but still a constant flow.

The service needle and needle I replaced were a little different. The one I took off had holes in it

Any other ideas?

Get a new float?

Well something is going very wrong. I put the old needle back in (this time with the main jets) and the bowls completely over filled!

Decided to send to Paul at Weber carb recon. He had offered to sort for £50. Which is very reasonable. He did a very good job on 40s on the 356. I wish I could watch someone do it, and learn, but can't take any time off work at the moment.

Hi Neil, can you share the details of Paul for the recon please? I'm having some issues with my 44 IDF's which have recently started stalling when hot. I am going to trouble shoot an airleak, but turning up the idle doesn't really work, plus I am only masking whatever the real issue is. Cleaned the idle jets but maybe there is crap in the system elsewhere.

Well I don't feel like a complete Muppet now. Paul called and said the float had a tiny hole and was sitting slightly lower than another float he had. He has sold me that second hand float and the carb will be back with me tomorrow. Says this is a first in his doing these. Good service from him as normal.
